THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I'm thinking about applying to a job in Coeur d'Alene and wondered what its like living there. It appears to be a nice small city and close to Spokane for slightly bigger city stuff. What is the cost of liviing like in Coeur d'Alene? I have a 7 year old boy so I need to think about schools. Are the public schools any good? I'm open to all information. |

If you live right in town, it can be relatively spendy. It is a resort town, so if you want a nice lake front house, you're gonna pay. The pace of life is slow outside two or three weeks a year, then the whole north end of the state is over run.
Can't speak to the schools. |

I currently live in a tourist town and understand the effects it has on cost of living. I don't intend on having a lake front home, but a 200K 3-4 bedroom ranch in a low crime area within 20 minutes of work (near City Park & Beach). Am I assume it is the summer when tourists flock in? I've never been to Idaho, Washington, or Montana so I welcome comments. Can one swim in Lake Coeur d'Alene in the summer or does it stay too cold? |

My wife grew up in CdA and her parents still live there, so we visit frequently. The downtown area is somewhat expensive, catering to summer tourists. Everything gets cheaper as you travel away from that area. Busiest tourist times are during the summer (Car d'Alene auto show, Art on the Green Festival, Ironman Triathlon).
The lake is gorgeous and very large. Fed from the mountains, so it does stay very cold... but during the dog days of summer, the temperatures get high enough that many people will still willingly jump in.
Idaho has both income tax and sales tax (which is even collected on food, unlike may states). I believe both are around 6%. Like most areas nationwide, housing prices have dropped substantially in the last few years, so you can probably find some good deals if you're looking to buy. All NFA items are legal there. |

Thanks for the info. Cost of living calculators put Coeur dAlene at about 5% more than Savannah. I bet I'll spend that on heat and cold weather clothes ,

you'll find quite a selection in that price range. here are some properties in the area; most of those listings don't have homes, but should give you an idea.
When you're looking for housing, Rathdrum, Hayden, and Post Falls are all within 20 minutes; the closer you get to Spokane (read: Post Falls) the less resort-like it is. Originally Posted By five2one:

You'll spend in on snow tires, and a mellow 6" lift for your wife's rig, and an aggressive 10" lift for yours, and new axles, plus machine guns... ![]() |

You will be hard pressed to find a more pleasant place to live and or raise kids. Except for the occasional drug store robbery and car prowling, there is little crime. The Summers are awesome (swimming (the public beach is legendary), boating, hiking, bicycling and two nice shooting ranges). In the winter there are an equal number of activities but it is just a lot colder. If you're living in town, or at least not too far out -no special vehicles are required. Idaho -God bless 'em- allows Class III weapons. The income tax is a bummer but the sales tax is fairly low.
Welcome to the area. |
