Just got the word...promotion to Riverton, WY. Tell me about the awesomeness of the area. Read an old post about some guy moving to Casper and that sounded promising. Now tell me about Riverton! Coming from Lewiston, ID which has pretty cool country and people so Riverton better be the bomb. And I am not talking Starbucks and shopping malls.

Next to the Wind River Indian reservation. Thermopolis is not to far away for sitting in Hot Springs. I really don't know about to much of that area.

I had the best Chile Relleno at a mexican restaurant there. Other than that I think Riverton is shitty.

Also,

The guy who makes/made lucid red dot scopes lives in Riverton. Along with the Brunton factory being located there.

Riverton has Wyoming's only casino.  Which is cool.  There's also some excellent hiking, fishing and camping in that area.
But the Wind River Reservation is right there, which can cause problems.  I've visited Riverton many times, and have had friends who lived there.  What I'm about to say is not racially motivated, these are facts from personal experience and stories told to me by people I trust.
Anything you put outside that isn't bolted down, and some things that are bolted down, will be stolen.  My friends that lived there had the propane tank off their barbeque stolen several times.  They had the spare tires stolen from under their truck.  Those cheap solar powered lights were stolen from their front yard.  Their kids bikes were stolen in the middle of the day when they were left in an open garage.  Lock your stuff up tight.
Make sure your car insurance covers you against uninsured motorists.  Mine didn't the first time I was there, and a resident of the reservation decided to drink a case of beer and go for a drive.  He crossed the center line and hit me head on.  He had no insurance, and I have no recourse since he lives in a sovereign nation and is living off the government payouts.  I've heard this same story from dozens of people from that area.
It is not a bad place, you've just got to protect yourself and remember that the rules don't necessarily apply to everyone like they should.

eta: The box men at the craps table don't seem to understand the odds and calculate payouts correctly.  Gotta watch them.

xdoctor,  When they get the craps table? Was there last year and wasn't there then. I will be in Riverton the 25-27 of May for the Wyoming Weapons Collectors gun show. Also there is a casino north of Lander called the Shosnoi Rose. I seen on the tv show  Friends of NRA that there is a new shooting range east of Riverton. I e-mailed the city but never recieved a relpy so it must not be city property. You have decent weather in Fremont County which is much better then Sweetwater County.   Rich

I lived there for a couple of months in the mid 70s while roughnecking. We stayed in a kitchenette motel. Great scenery and rec opportunities in

nearby mtns. A huge irrigated farming area to the north. It is a good-sized town for WY now, it hosts the NW regionals in high school BB I know.

Has a junior college (WY has only one 4 year university). Big-city shopping (for WY) is what, 120 miles in Casper.

I have a landlord that lives in Lewiston, ID.  Riverton is much higher than your 800 feet and is quite snowy.

Thank you guys. Just got back last night from the long drive with 3 kids in the seat. Actually went well with only minimum complaints from the kids and yelling from dad (me). The community seemed squared away. Friendly folks and clean town. Looking very forward to the move. I will miss Idaho greatly however. Oh and Stag, ask you landlord about Waha...that's where I currently live. :)

He's a dentist and a hunting fool.  I call over there about something and his wife usually says something like "Oh, he's off hunting in Uzbekistan".
