All classes last 2 - 2.5hrs and cost $20 each.

July 15:
Tactical Riflescopes
Defensive Shotgun - Setup & Use

July 29:
AR-15 Defensive Carbine - Setup & Maintenance
Defensive Carbine - Tactics & Techniques

July 15:
Tactical Riflescopes, starts at 10:30am:

Today’s riflescopes have far more features and capabilities than previous generations of scopes.  In the right hands those features can make you a far more capable rifle shooter.  But a shooter must understand how to use the features and functions for them to be of any use.  Worse, not understanding how to use your scope’s features and functions can actually make you a less capable shooter.

This course covers all aspects of riflescope equipment selection, use, and maintenance.  It not only covers the fundamentals of riflescopes (which by themselves can be quite confusing to a lot of shooters!) but also more advanced topics to help you squeeze all the potential out of both your equipment and your shooting skills.

This course covers such topics as:
Red dot vs fixed power vs variable power
Basic ballistics
Mounting and mounting systems
How to zero a riflescope
Recommended zero distances for different applications
How to set and use Zero Stop
How to adjust for distances, hold over, etc.
How to record adjustment and setting data in a log book
How to adjust for conditions such as wind
Equipment cleaning, care, and maintenance
Reticle and adjustment types (mil-dot, MOA, etc.) and their advantages/disadvantages
How to estimate distance to target
How to use your scope’s advanced features and functions
Differences between first focal plane (FFP) and second focal plane (SFP) scopes

Defensive Shotgun - Setup and Use, starts at 1:00pm
The shotgun is an ubiquitous weapon in the arsenals of America; military, law enforcement, and civilian.  They are supremely versatile and a quality model can be quite inexpensive when compared to a comparable quality handgun or carbine.

Few weapons are as flexible as the scattergun when it comes to the range of ammunition available.  While a shotgun doesn't replace a good carbine in all roles, their tasks do overlap, and the shotgun is capable of much more than a lot of firearms gurus give it credit for.

This course covers such topics as:
Brief history of the shotgun's use as a combat arm
Pump vs semi-auto vs break-action
Semi-autos: gas-operated vs recoil-operated vs inertia-operated
Pros and cons of various manufacturers' models
Differences between an 870 Police model and a non-Police model
Ammunition selection
Accessories such as sights, lights, optics, slings, ammo carriers, and stocks
Differences in chokes, backboring, and lengthening of the forcing cone(s)
Loading, unloading, and switching loads with various models
Use of different types of slings
Transitioning to a secondary weapon (handgun)
Use of strong and support side cover
Maintenance
Safe storage

July 29:
AR-15 Defensive Carbine - Setup & Maintenance, starts at 10:30am:

The AR-15 has become the most popular defensive carbine in America.  The system's modularity allows it to be customized to meet the unique needs of its owner.  The vast number of options and accessories available for the weapon make gear selection difficult for those new to the platform.  Even those familiar with the AR-15 have a hard time keeping up with the constant stream of new products that are available.  This course is designed for everyone: those shopping for their first AR-15 trying to make sense of all the acronyms and specifications, the novice looking for tips on maintenance and lubrication, and seasoned AR-15 platform veterans looking to grow their skill set as it relates to the latest gear development and rifle setup.

This course covers:
Field stripping, maintenance, cleaning, and proper lubrication
Gear selection including rifles, stocks, grips, forward grips, slings, rails, magazines, ammunition, flashlights, flashlight mounts, optics, and back up sights
Proper carbine setup and basic operation
Examples of specific topics covered include:
1/3 versus absolute co-witness of sights
Advantages and disadvantages of 1, 2, and 3-point slings
Proper sight in distance for a defensive carbine
Note: The instructor will have an AR-15 style rifle for demonstration purposes so you do not need to bring a rifle to the workshop.

Defensive Carbine - Tactics & Techniques, starts at 1:00pm
This course is an intermediate level course that builds upon Precision Applications’ AR15 Defensive Carbine – Setup & Maintenance course.  It covers basic tactics and techniques for deploying a carbine in a defensive scenario.  Home defense scenarios will receive special attention since it is the most likely location a defensive carbine will be deployed for someone outside law enforcement or the military.  The tactics and techniques covered are broad enough to apply to any defensive carbine, but heavy emphasis will be paid to the AR15 platform due to its high popularity.

Examples of topics covered include:
Low light and the use of flashlights
Malfunction clearance
Reloads and magazine changes
Use of optics
Basics of room clearing
Basics of working in teams
Use of cover and/or concealment
Transitioning from shoulder-to-shoulder
Transitioning to secondary weapon

You do not need to bring your own shotgun, but you can if you'd like me to look at it.

Don't have any plans on that.

What sort of Range Officer course are you looking for?  USPSA?  NRA?

Either one I suppose. You know me as a staff member of the Angry Emu Range and I would like to become qualified as a RO for our shoots. I'm also making plans for hosting a 2 gun shoot at our place in the near future and any instruction as to safety and fire arm control would be beneficial. Thanks for your response. Hope to see you at the fall shoot.
