My two oldest boy's were supposed to be survival camping with their scout troop this weekend.  That is until the scoutmaster remembered that firearms season started this weekend.

Btw, nice buck Gentleman!

Sat in a tree stand all day today, saw five does only one offered a half way okay shot.  Figured they wouldn't be so jumpy...maybe they know it's the first day of rifle season

We've seen plenty of deer this season but nothing we consider a "shooter".

We are already seeing signs of the rut so the big boys should start moving soon.

I just hope my food plots hold out. Zero significant rainfall in 8 to 10 weeks and nothing in the 10 day forecast.

We probably got a 1/2" at best when hurricane Matthew came through.

That's an awesome first buck. Some people hunt for years before killing one like that. He has some tall tines. Still relatively young too.

Come on down and I'll put you in a stand.

You can hunt for a day or pull your camper and stay all weekend.

Bulloch.

I went this afternoon in Jenkins and it was much different. Does didn't seem to be as jumpy or alert, didn't see any bucks.

Saw three does Sat with no buck following...

Sun three mutts from across the road ran a buck by my stand Sun morning. I fired a warning shot close to the dogs and stopped that crap. Next time it will be SSS. Taking the suppressed blackout with a full mag of subsonic 220 Sierras for their dumb asses. Some from the HTF shoot know what I can do with it. Hopefully it won't be needed.

Was looking for this guy.

Hunted Laurens Co hard yesterday morning. Walked two small bucks and 5 does. Hit my other property in Jones Co yesterday afternoon... nothing but 10 turkeys in the field I was hunting.. Plenty of deer on the cams.. just not good timing with the big boys. Will be back at it this weekend...

Someone at the MOA shoot got their first deer.   2500? Rounds fired that day and the deer don't care!  I have trained them well. Lol

I have a proven deer dog if anyone gets in trouble with a lost deer.

At least 4.5! Lookit those bases... got a real close up with his head right at the cam, and they are very thick. He is hanging in that area and scraping the hell out of it. Looks like he's defending it too, got scars all over his neck, sides, and the right side antler looks chipped to hell already. Only an 8-pt so IMO he has spread enough genetics, he is going down as soon as my hunt buddy or I get a crosshair on him.

I finally got out yesterday.  Didn't see anything.  Food plots are dried up and dusty.  The drought has radically altered the deer movement where I hunt as creeks are dry there weren't before.

Well I got back yesterday after hunting since Monday. I saw a huge body 8 pointer on Monday evening. He only came out of the thicket about 10 ft. Just messing around with a scrape and rubbing on branches. I let him walk, all three times he came out. I regret not shooting him, but if I shoot a buck I'm going to mount him. I figured I already have an 8 on my wall, and I'm waiting for that elusive 10 pointer. I never saw him again. I'll probably shoot him if I see him again though.  If not, he'll be an awesome deer next year. I hunted a thick area of brush and white oaks Wednesday morning. Her one doe bleating, and a big buck grunting. He wouldn't come out of the thicket though. I saw his tracks on the dirt road, and he's a big boy. Rut hasn't really started where I'm at (Washington County). There were some spikes and sixes chasing does, but the does are still in groups. A small 8pt was in rut, and all blown up, but he wasn't chasing. No does had black hocks either.

Lot of acorns falling. No interest in corn. Its all about water and acorns right now. I've been reading that people are seeing rut activity, but not where I was. Should start this week or next. I'm heading back for a week this weekend.

Any other reports on activity?

Killed a big doe last evening right at sundown with the thermal & suppressed .308. Nice offhand 100 yard shot across a clearing. Thought I got it on video, but the IRD MKII turns off the video out every time power cycles, and I keep forgetting to turn it back on every time I power up, dangit. Good eatin', having bacon wrapped tenderloins tonight. Those never make it to a freezer.

This fat dude came out grunting following a doe. Not the buck I was after, but a nice one, over 200 lbs.. I played hell getting his big butt out of the woods by myself. Had to field-dress him before I could get him on the 4-wheeler. Having a Euro mount done, and got a lot of meat.

Culled this guy out last week. He had some pieball in him, and was an old 6pt with a strangely tall rack. He had these stubby legs too. Just an ugly deer with an ugly rack. He was about to mount a doe and I'm like "no sir" Kapoo-ya. And he dropped. I'm all about managing good genes where I hunt. A typical buck that age should be an awesome 8 or more. His rack was just terrible. Nothing broken from fighting or anything. I cut his hocks off and froze them. Second rut should be going on, and I'm going to hang one up in a tree.

It looks better from the side than what it actually was. Here is a head on shot that will show you what I mean.

There are several 4 pointers with very tall racks that fork at the top. I'm pretty sure they are his youngsters.

And here's one shot right at a mile(straight line) from where I hunt. Maybe 2 miles from the above deer. This is on the 60 day wait to rescore for what is now presumed to be the new Murray county record.

I believe he said 179. Current record is 172"3/4 iirc.

ETA: it should be in GON and I believe one other publication picked it up already.

You sure about that? He looks like a young spike.

They've had him on camera the last 2 years. The first year they thought he was a spike, then last year he got bigger but the antlers didn't. I was told to keep an eye out for him when I went to that particular stand because that is where they always caught him on the same camera. Otherwise I was only allowed to shoot does. To them, he was a cull. I couldn't care either way, I was just hunting for meat.
