The veteran plate was $80 the last time I looked. You still have to pay ad velorem tax and tag fee. How'd you pay nothing?

I was in the opt-in window with the new tax thing.  It worked out where I had to pay, I think, $30 more than I would have paid for ad velorem tax that year so now I only pay a $20 tag fee.

The tag for my new FREE Nissan was only $20. Thanks to the dealer, the Feds, the State of Georgia, and free electricity at work, I plan to lease all my future vehicles as long as there are Federal and State rebates! The owner of the vehicle pays the taxes which is the dealer in the case of a lease.

And I guess the tag was really free also since I am now netting $20 to $30 every month I drive the car verses driving the Thunderbird.

Exactly... the new tax is horrible for people who buy cars often. Great for those that hold onto their stuff. Its hard to beat $20 a year.

Not really that hard to beat it, $0 per year.

Why do people flip so much about that? What do people think someone can do with that number (that, like is posted above, is available to anyone who sees your car IRL).

Same thing with serial numbers on guns. Who cares??

I don't count ad valorem. Its a one time thing. Vet tags are free if you can prove it. Got a regular army veteran tag on my 87 mustang. My wife's car has my Iraq tag, and I'm holding off on the Afghan tag for whenever I get a truck.

Since I am more than likely moving to GA in 2015, can you please explain to me what this is all about? I thought you paid a tax on the value of the car or something like that?

You pay a one time tax on what the state claims is the value of the car.  Georgia doesn't care if it has one mile or a million miles on it, GA also doesn't car if you paid $1 or $50,000, the value falls on a table set by the department of revenue, and you pay it.  My 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis was $450 last year.  Prior to this, you paid an ad velorum tax every year, and it was still based off of what the state of GA stated that your car is worth, but the ammount is smaller due to paying the tax every year.  My Spitfire and my F150 fall under the old system.
