I am flying out of Hartsfield-Jackson Friday morning to Boston, with a 10:25 AM departure time. The last time I flew was several years ago to Los Angeles, probably around '08 or so. I do remember the experience was unremarkable, with virtually no lines and very little wait time. I can't remember the exact day we flew, but it was during the week in January or February. Can I expect this trip to the airport to be much of the same? My concern is, I get off work Friday morning around 7am, so the earliest I can possibly leave is 7:15-7:30. Its roughly 90 miles to the airport, and I have two ways I can take to get to the airport. I can hit I-20 in Madison and head east into Atlanta, or I can hit I-75 in Jackson south of McDonough and head north. I believe the I-75 route is the better option, as that's the route we took last time. Problem is, I will be getting to the airport around 9am or so, which means I will be hitting all the traffic. Those who deal with Atlanta traffic, will I be better off on I-75 or I-20?

Also, for those who travel a lot through the airport, is an hour enough time to matriculate through the airport and board my flight? I hope to be in the airport by 9:30, and my flight leaves at 10:25. Is this possible on a Friday morning?

An hours will probably be enough but Hartsfield can hit or miss really. I always try and plan two hours, but have never needed it. As far as the commute in you can come straight up 75/85 and go that way. Another route is 285 to Camp Creek Pwy. Good luck, I don't think that the airport experience will be as much a problem as your commute in could be. One idiot driving HUA could effect the entire commute.....best of luck to you.

The drive really is more of my concern, and I hope I can make it in under 2hrs. I may have to simply figure out a way to leave by 7am, just so I don't run into any unexpected problems.

Would I be better off coming west on I-20?

School starts tomorrow. Plan with that in mind. First day and lots of extra traffic on the roads.

I fly every week. Traffic in Atlanta is unpredictable at best, as most of us know. Aside form traffic, the airport has certain times where the lines are very long to get through security. Mondays and Fridays are heaviest due to business travelers heading out and vacationers going on weekend jaunts.

Give yourself at least 45-60 minutes to get through security (it could only take 15-20 on a good day, but it is better to expect the worst). Then give yourself another 20 minutes to get to your gate. If you fly out of the T,A or B terminals, you can get there in 10 minutes. However, if you fly out of C,D, or E, it could take you 20 minutes to get to your gate with the train, and then walking.

There are three security checkpoints. The main one with 80% of the travelers, and then one in the North Terminal, and one in the South Terminal. The South Terminal has the frequent fliers and TSA pre-check, so dont use that one. The one in the North side is small (about 3-4 security scanners) but moves much faster than the main since not a lot of people know about it.
I do my best to believe the crap in your posts.....

I'm going to try and leave by 6:30 Friday morning, so hopefully that should give me enough time. Now, I just need to figure out the best place to park. I'm flying AirTran, but I am not sure where their section is at the airport yet. Any suggestions?

Airtran is on the North Terminal (otherwise known as the Blue side). I park at Park N' Fly Plus on Camp Creek Parkway, but there are many others to choose from. They pick you up at your car and take you to the airport directly. You save some money over parking at the airport and you get frequent parking points as well if you sign up online.

Others have given great advice. You can wait for the plane, but the airline will not wait for you. Leave work early (as you have decided to do), don't mess around during the commute (like stopping for gas, coffee, breakfast, etc.), fill up your car the night before, head straight for your destination as traffic is unpredictable. You will arrive in Atlanta during peak rush hour, on the interstates as well as in the terminal, expect delay on ALL of the major interstates.

Remember, no guns, knives, nunchakus, pepper spray, ammo, throwing stars, RPG, screw drivers, etc. through the TSA checkpoints !

As for parking, take others recommendation of using the park and ride. While you may get lucky in finding a parking spot at the airport lot, many times you end up driving in circle looking for a spot. My park and ride lot of choice is Peachy Airport Parking. They usually run groupon deals that will let you park for $6 a day indoors. They pick you up at your car and drop you off at the terminal, shuttles run every 5 minutes or less. They will bring you back to your car on your return trip.

Not a good idea, flights board generally 30-45 minutes before departure. That leaves you 10-15 minutes to get through security which is a crap shoot, even on the best day it will still take 15-20 minutes to get through. Add another 10-15 minutes to get to your gate As said before Mondays and Fridays are often the busiest travel days, especially morning flights. With the airlines charging for baggage everyone tries to get on the plane 1st because if you're on the plane towards the end of boarding chances are you're going to have the flight attendants check your carry on.. Boarding is prioritized 1st boarding are people that need assistance (wheelchairs), then people with kids, then first class. People usually respect the boarding procedure up till this point. Next to board are Medallion/Skymiles Gold, Sliver, Platinum etc. but this is generally when it becomes a free for all. People who are not Medallion level start boarding, generally the gate attendants don't bother to check Medallion level or zones. Hell I've seen people board when 1st class was called and their seats were in the back of the plane. After Medallion is Zone 1, then Zone 2, Zone 3 If you're Zone 3 I can guarantee you that your carry on will be checked, which defeats the purpose of a carry on.

Was at Hartsfield this morning at 0745, the security wait time was 40 minutes, and the train ride to D gates was about 10 minutes....longest lines I've ever seen and I fly or go to the airport a lot.

I fly all of the time. I want 90 minutes from pulling into the airport (using airport park and ride). More on Monday AM. And I don't have to pay if I miss a flight. But I've never missed a flight due to not being on time when I was there 90 minutes early.

I would not do I-20, and I-75 hits the airport almost opposite of where you want to be- figure 6-8 minutes to get arround to the domesic exit on 285/85.

Check in Online, and use the South or North (not Center) points. Given a choice follow the disinterested business person, not the family, tourist, or foreigner. if you make it to the gate 15 minutes prior to departure you will be OK. Any latter and the gate agent may refuse boarding, or my favorite, leave the desk for 5 minutes and then refuse boarding because it's in the 10 minutes prior to departure.

If you're late you may have to gate check your bags (free on Delta when they run out of space. It's also a 1/4 mile from the centerpoint of the concourses to the ends. That can make a big difference.

I'm working on getting to the airport by 9am at the very latest, which should give me enough time (barring a major issue). I should be able to leave by 6:30 Friday morning, which will allow me 2.5hrs of travel time (for a trip that normally takes around 1.5hrs or so). Actually, now that I thik about it, I may be better off leaving at 6am. No reason in pushing the issue!

I'm coming from Milledgeville, so picking which way to travel is really becoming the biggest decision. I can hit I-20 in Madison and go west, or I can hit I-75 north of Jackson or close to Locust Grove and head north. I've heard that I-75 & 675 can be murderous from 730-830, so I really don't know what to do.

Either way you WILL hit traffic. I-20 it will start at or before Panola road and be bumper to bumper till 285. Once you're on 285 there should be no traffic. I-75 traffic starts at Jonesboro, Jodeco road area and never lets up. You're better off going I-20.

I like to arrive at the check in counter at least an hour befor the flight leaves. Military gets to use the short line for the people with flying perks.

Ok, I think I have figured out my route to the airport. I am going to take I-20 to 285 South, and then take 285 South to Riverdale Rd and follow Riverdale to the Park Ride lots. Any potential issues with this route?

I'd take 20 to 285 south and get off at camp creek. There are park and ride lots all along there. If your talking about the lots where you leave your car and they take you to the airport in a bus.... sometimes I get confused.
