THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Just ordered a Browning X-bolt comp stalker in 7mm-08 for Kelly to use this deer season. Anyone here have one, or a 7mm08 in general. If so what ammo are you getting good results with. Also anyone have any good sub $400 scope suggestions.

I had a Remington 700 7mm-08. I used 140 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertips almost exclusively- they are about as accurate as it gets, and devastating to a deer.

Here's the site for the ammo:
http://www.winchester.com/products/rifle-ammunition/Advanced/Ballistic-Silvertip/Pages/SBST708.aspx

And the site for the scope I used, which now sits on my Winchester 70 pre-'64 .308:

I have been shooting a 708 for almost 10 years and have killed numerous deer with it.

Not to crap on moose's post but i had horrible luck with the winchester super elite $50 silver tip bullets. I lost a deer and almost lost a second one while shooting them. I figured it was my fault the first time (and it may still be) but the second time i had to shoot the deer 3 times and ended up killing it with my knife. Two good shots in the shoulder / heart region with zero expansion.

After that year i dropped back to the old tried and true round....$20 walmart corelock (spelling). The first deer i shot at the next season was drt.

All i can figure is the silver tips were too hot or i missed something substantial enough to expand.

My scope is a 3x9 Atec

To each his own though, i would try a few different ones

I just sold the perfect scope. A Vortex 2-7. I think it would make a perfect hunting scope here on the east coast. It was small, light weight, super bright and sharp, and a great all round magnification.

Yeah, I don't know about 7-08 specifically (i shoot a 270 win), but honestly for a variety of medium game like deer and hog, the remington core-lokt ammo that you can get anywhere is super. i actually used the whitetail pro variant of the remington ammo and it performed beautifully. for what you find around here, I honestly dont feel like id get any extra value for the $50/box stuff.

Again, not 7mm, (but a 270 is a 6.8, so pretty close right? ) but here are some pics of the bullet performance on pigs the last time i shot any with that gun. (150gr SP):

Some may consider this graphic, just FYI in case blood makes you fall out of your chair or something...

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_9/642734_.html

As you can see, after basically entering through one of the eyes, it worked quite well as it moved through the head at a downward angle to rip the shit out of the big one's neck. The little ones really weren't even fair () but even the ones shot across the head/neck experienced good bullet performance, as it acted before passing all the way through. 4 rounds fired, 4 insta-dead pigs, so great record even just there. Couldnt really ask for a prettier result!

Also, thread is archived, so not sure if non-members can see?

I've had good luck with the barnes ammo in .223, I figured I'd have to buy a box of everything to figure out what groups best, just trying to get a head start. I'll have to check out the redfield scopes. How many rounds should I run through the rifle before checking my groups with different ammo. Sorry I know black rifles, all my hunting rifles were bought before I was born and never needed a new one, so I'm a little out of my territory with thebrand new "fudd rifles", lol

The 7-08 is a great, and often overlooked cartridge. I carry mine in a Remington Model 7.

Can't help with commercial ammo because I never bought any. But, I would advise to stay away from any commercial stuff that carries a Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet. They are well made but don't seem to perform too well as a hunting option.
The Nosler Partition is another story, they are great.
I use Barnes bullets and they are available in commercial loads now. They aren't cheap but they aren't for plinking either.

I hope this helped a little.

As far as I'm concerned there is no better scope in the $300.00 & under category than the Redfield Revolution 3x9.

There are easily as bright and clear if not more so than a Leupold VXII.

More importantly Redfield is now a sister company to Leupold so you will benefit from their world class warranty and customer service.

My 7mm-08 is one of those old ruger frontier rifles, so I can't recommend a scope, but I would stay away from Federal Fusion. My last time out, I shot a buck with it at about 100 yds, and it took off running and hardly left any blood to follow. Figured I had somehow messed up, but found the deer after a long, long search, with a tiny hole on each side, putting a line right through the sweet spot. Must've passed straight through with no expansion

nikon pro staff is a good scope too. I got one off of midway for 160. I was going to replace my atec but it shot .25 moa on my first 3 bullets last year so im not touching it. I ended up giving it to my father who was still using a 30 year old tasco on his 7mag.

damn all of this has really got me wanting to go hunting. Post up some pics (with kelly ) when you get it all set up.

Ok, ordered the rifle on friday and he had it in today, i was putting another stand up when he called so we just got home with the rifle. I mounted the scope and cleaned all the "anti-rust coating" out of the gun, so tomorrow we'll get it sighted in and post some better pics. I went with the red field revolution 3-9x40, and am very happy with it so far, I'll probably upgrade later, but for now it seems like a great scope for the $. I've been wanting to try the DNZ Game Reaper mount's out, so I figured this would be the perfect rifle to put them on. Trigger really surprised me, extremely light pull, almost no take-up or over travel at all, just a crisp click ..Here's a few pics for now. She's happy as hell with it, we'll know more tomorrow when she actually gets to put a few rounds through it.

I've got a Redfield Revolution on my CZ 527 7.62x39 and I find it more than adequate.

Great scope/rifle combo....

Thanks for the suggestion on the scope, We were at my moms house in Peachtree city all weekend so i figured while I was kinda close I'd swing by Bass Pro and pick one up. Plus Kelly had never been to a Bass Pro Shops. Extremely happy with the Scope so far, Much clearer than I'd expect, I'll know more tomorrow especially around dusk. Now I gotta decide on a new hunting rifle for myself
