Im looking at buying a side folder kit with a new chrome barrel already mostly installed and one of the nodak EZ receivers. How difficult is it for someone with a moderate level of experience building most things, and a pretty good level of mechanical ability? How easy are the tools to aquire and or fabricate?

Ive built a few dozen. It isn't that hard once you get into it. What kit are you getting and ill tell you what tools you'll need.

Its not hard at all, the only drawback would be if it is a virgin kit, and you would have to drill and ream your holes. Tooling gets pricey at that point. If you do not have sheetmetal/riveting type experience, locating blind holes etc, it might get frustrating, but really it is an easy process overall. It does look intimidating at first until you have the right tools and do it.

And this receiver.

Model NDS-2SF with plate
"Premium" AKS74 sidefolder receiver. This variant comes with the "round tab" pistol grip reinforcement plate.    caliber 5.45x39

The new batch do not have pre-drilled front trunion rivet holes. They will still have the hole and slot for the stock latch.

I am about to do my first build: a Yugo underfolder with a non matching barrel. I can do the build, just need a hydraulic press for rivets/barrel and may need help with headspacing.

I built an AMD-65 a few years ago. It was fun getting all the parts and stuff. You'll realize just how stupid government is when you have to throw out perfectly good parts for US made parts.

I remember when those kits were like $200, and the romy G kits were $99. I wish I had stocked up on them...

I wish those would of been in stock two months ago.... can build those in about 2 and a half hours with the tooling AK builder sells. All you really need is a bearing press and you can do almost all of the riviots at once. but the tooling cost about $500. now, the only thing is, putting in the side folder latch is test in patience. I hate installing those things.

Here is a video to doing a Polish underfolder build. There are 4 parts to the whole build, but I think I covered every possible aspect of the build if you want to see whats involved. I also used a rivet gun as opposed to a rivet squeezer but you get to see all the tools I used to do the job. If interested, I also have videos up on how to build a PSL from a kit, sadly those kits are no longer available.

Thats also a nice kit you picked out, pricey, but thats what they cost these days. I see it has a .214 bore, which explains why Centurys AK74s keyhole with their .223 bores. For a long time Century blamed surplus ammo as being bad.

Hey, grab a side mount scope rail, your gonna want one on it eventually and putting it on the day its build is the best time. Get a BP-01 side mount scope mount and your ready to go. I built a couple off of flats a few years ago and love them! Technically I built one for the wife, but she didn't want it

Yea, I looked at aks after getting a 5.45 upper and was shocked at the prices. I'll stick to an at platform for those prices.
