What about a thread for those interested, that list qualifications of members. There maybe the occasional question that comes up about a trade or vocation. There may be people from time to time that are looking for someone with the skills needed to do various types of work. Some things that need to be done may require special licensing. Just a thought.

I think this is a great idea Mark!! I actually lost my job recently due to some old high school office politics.

Im currently living in the Cumberland Mall area. Willing to relocate to anywhere for work in the city of Atlanta or north of Atlanta (Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, etc. just not in the ghetto or far away from the young life). Also willing to move out of state to another decently sized city, preferably with a decent ratio of females to males.

Background

I graduated in '09 with a double major in Accounting and Finance with Major GPA of 3.48 and 3.43 respectively.  My honors and awards consist of Accounting Honor Society, Dean’s List – 4 Terms, Academic Achievement Award 2007-2009, and HOPE Scholarship. My leadership experience and student activities consist of President of both the Accounting Club and Finance Club, Student Member, Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSCPA), Performed motivational speeches about the benefit of a degree in accounting before students of the University of West Georgia and of Alexander High School respectively, and Headed UWG’s 2009 Winter Blood Drive as Team Leading Coordinator surpassing personal goal.

I passed all sections of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant exam on my first attempt from the beginning of '10 to mid year. My license is pending upon experience completion. I completed an internship at a local CPA firm and a contract position at one of the top 10 CPA firms in Atlanta for the busy season doing income taxation for business entities and high net-worth individuals.

What Im looking for

I came out of college thinking I was made for public accounting (fast track to climb the corp ladder, young and nothing holding me down from working the sweatshop 70 hour weeks, etc) I am coming to the realization that maybe tax is not my thing as it is pretty much law and it changes so frequently. I also dont see myself in external audit so public accounting is out. If it is not tax or audit but in public, Ill seriously consider it, but generally the entry level path to public is tax or audit...

I am now looking into industry/private as a staff accountant. Interested in financial reporting or possibly internal audit. I have even considered govt career path at this point. I will be trying to get into the IRS (yes i know everyone hates them) as a special agent, whats cooler than crunching numbers and carrying a gun... My dream would be incorporating myself into doing accounting work in some kind of firearms business since firearms is my #1 hobby.

I know it sucks, but if you don't do 3-5 years in Public Accounting it will be almost impossible for you to ever rise higher than a low-level manager. You have to have those years in public accounting to make Controller or CFO. I would highly recommend a Big 4 or large regional firm.

International Paper in Augusta. Check the website and if there is anything available that you think you can handle.....apply on-line. IM me and we'll talk. I can get your resume' placed on the top of the stack and the company will then set up your testing dates. (Passing is up to you). Mechanical/Millwright and Electrical/Instrumentation. The pay is awesome.....almost 27 per hour to start with LOTS of overtime. Top pay is close to 30 an hour.  It is hard, smelly, dirty, knuckle-busting work. You also have to be a thinker, welder (we can teach you that), and EXTREMELY mechanically inclined for the millwright positions. I know that Unions aren't favored here on ARF, so I must let you know that if you go with the millwright position....we are mostly members of the United Steel Workers. (USW...It's a TRADE union). You DO NOT HAVE to join the Union.

Hope this helps someone,

My former company was generous enough to offer me outplacement service through a company called Lee Hecht Harrison. One of the things they stress is that you target specific companies, and then try to find an insider within the company to try and reach the hiring manager in your area. I was hoping as part of this thread that people looking to work at a particular company or list of companies could post their desires here. Surely someone knows somebody at the target company or is a friend of a friend. From what the outplacement folks have told me, most of the good jobs are filled through networking with friends, neighbors and even random strangers. In the almost 30 years I've been working, I believe there is only one job I landed that I did not have some sort of connection into the company by either knowing the hiring manager or knowing someone who knew him/her. This goes all the way back to my first job at Taco Bell.

Linkedin (http://www.linkedin.com) is a great tool for connecting to other professionals, as well as former co-workers, etc. Before I go on interviews, I'm able to look up the person who is interviewing me, and get some information about them and their professional background. Sometimes they know a bunch of people you know. The same thing happens in reverse. Potential employers will look at my linkedin profile to see where I have been, and who I know. I interviewed with a guy yesterday who had worked at the same company I had worked for years ago, and we had a ton of common connections. I suspect he called those guys up to check on me, which is what I did as well.

In a nutshell, if you are targeting a specific company/companies, perhaps you can mention it here or maybe in another thread and see if anybody knows or possibly is an insider.

I am a network engineer, and have lots of experience designing, implementing, upgrading and supporting medium to very large networks

My strengths are the ability to learn quickly, thrive in a team environment and solve problems.

I have experience in these areas:
Cisco
routers
switches (stack-able and chassis)
firewalls (pix and FWSM)
I'm comfortable working in OSPF and EIGRP environments, have even worked in RIPv2 and BGP

I have some experience doing MAC work on Cisco Call Manager, but unfortunately I'm no expert on it. There's a lot of money and demand for Cisco Voice experts right now.

Nortel
Chassis switches (86xx and 83xx)
Contivity VPN appliances

I hold these certifications:
CCNP
CCDP
CCVP
CISSP

I'm in college in Eastman getting my A&P, but circumstances are going to leave my personal finance situation a bit lean shortly, so if anyone has any hook ups with an aerospace company I'd greatly appreciate a good word or two.

Applied at Warner Robins AFB, was told I didn't make the cut. Apparently they're having some sort of hiring freeze. Also applied at Lockheed Martin in Marietta. I have a friend who is spamming their HR department with my resume every week, but any little bit helps.

I'm in the next to last semester before I finish the A&P program here. I have a current Secret clearance, and have a communications background in the military. Anyone who can help, please email me. Thanks so much.

Well it looks like I need another part-time job.  I'm a full-time LEO, and was teaching drivers ed to high school students.  I was told today that they are letting go of all the part-time instructors because business is slow.

I live in Forsyth county and would consider just about any part-time job around this area.  I've been in law enforcement for six years, did some time in security before that, and I've also done sales for a little while.  I'm willing to learn anything new......

For those willing to move...

Southern Company is building 2 nuclear reactors in Burke County.  That is located south of Augusta.  Shaw is the main construction lead.  Even though this will only last until 2018 or so, Souther Nuclear (the part of Souther Co. that runs the nuclear side of the company) will almost double its crew to run Vogtle 3 and 4.  In Security alone they are talking about adding 150 in house officers.  They are already hiring system operators and such so that the work force will be in place before the units come on line.

All apps must be done online. Shaw and Southern Co. are the key words.  But please understand, the nuclear environment is different.

Time to throw mine out there in the hopes of an opportunity. My only professional job has been the fire service and I have lived, breathed and bled it since 1988. I left a secure position at a local Fire Department to become a metro Atlanta area departments, Fire Training Officer.
Regrettably, my position, along with many others were eliminated due to budget problems, 3 years after going to work for them. I have a lung problem from a previous on the job injury that will possibly hamper my entrance into any other department.
I have a great depth of knowledge and currently work EMS but would like to find something more substantial in an effort to provide better for my family.
We are caregivers to family members in 2 separate counties so relocation will not be possible.
Hoping that the networking here will possibly open a door.
Overview below with much more available to anyone who gives me a chance.
I am reachable via PM.
I have proudly served the citizens of Cherokee County
Georgia since 1988, my service has been in the area of Public Safety with
Health & Safety assignments in multiple areas and various capacities. I am
currently looking for a Full Time position in the area of Health and Safety
that will provide for my family and challenge me mentally and professionally.

I have a background with great depth and diversity as a
trainer / operator in the following areas:  incident management, life safety, incident
stabilization, emergency medical operations, emergency management, technical
rescue disciplines and hazardous materials response.

I am a certified public safety trainer at the local, state, regional
and national level, proudly serving since 1993 as an adjunct instructor with
the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. I also teach for the Center for
Domestic Preparedness, in Anniston Alabama, as a field instructor in the area
of weapons of mass destruction.

I possess national certifications in many various fire and
haz-mat subjects, I have achieved Pro Board Certifications as a Rescue Technician
in the disciplines of Rope, Trench, Confined Space, Structural Collapse and
Swift-Water Rescue.

I am also certified as Public Information Officer and have
met the prerequisites for my certification as a Certified Emergency Manager and
Master Certified Emergency Manager here in the state of Georgia.

I was a member of my counties Technical Rescue Team from
1995 to 2005 and a member of our Hazardous Materials Response Team member from
1997 to 2005.

I have been a staunch and committed servant to the public
safety community in Georgia for over 21 years and would like to respectfully
ask if I could be considered for a Health& Safety position within your
organization or agency. I feel that in me, you will find an extremely
dedicated, highly trained, self motivated, team player, which will always be an
advocate for employee safety. My hopes are that in some way, I can find a
career opportunity that will serve your organizations goals and objectives.

Much thanks for your time in reviewing this information and I hope
there is an opportunity for further discussion on this matter.

Just a tip for any college students looking to get with the GBI, apply to their internship program.

The application process is pretty simple, polygraph and background check, it does take a long time to process. For a fall internship you have to apply in may. But the experience is great and everyone is willing to work with you and your schedule.

(UPDATE: as of right now the job is frozen, I will update this post when they finally decide to hire)

Just as a heads up, where I work we will be needing a forklift driver on 2nd shift in shipping department at the beginning of the year. I am not sure if the job will be hired straight through the door or through temp agency. But if through the door the job starts at $12.65 hr after 90 days you get full benefits and 2 weeks vacation. The job is located in the Carrollton.

The only qualifications for this job are a HS diploma and ready to work as this is very fast paced environment.

If you are interested, IM me with your name and I will put in a word for you with the logistics manager.

We're still looking for a DBA to handle SQL Server and Oracle, we also need a senior Linux/UNIX admin, VMWare, AIX and SAN experience a plus, these will be for positions working in Marietta and Smyrna (client in Marietta, corporate offices in Smyrna).

In addition, our company is looking for people with strong organizational change/configuration management backgrounds and project managers with experience implementing Customer Information Systems (CIS), such as Oracle's Customer Care and Billing product, those positions may require significant travel.  The company's primary focus of consulting is the utility industry.

My former employer paid for me to go to an outplacement service to learn how to search for a job. I found it very helpful. I was very fortunate to work for a company that went the extra mile to help us out.

Here are some things I learned during my recent job search...YMMV

1. Create a new e-mail address for you job search...
If you post on Monster, etc. you'll get spammed, and in addition hackers will go after your account, so use a strong password
It also keeps your personal and job search stuff separate... and when you land a job, you can just ignore it

2. Use google voice, and forward to your cell.
That way you can just cut it off when you are done with your job search
I pulled my resume off of Monster months ago, and I still get 3-6 calls a week for jobs I'm not qualified for, or are not local. I wish I'd used google voice.

3. Don't put your home phone number down on your resume unless you are the only one who lives in the house...
See #2 above
I made that mistake, and my kids answered the phone and spoke with some recruiters.

4. Keep track of which resume version you've sent to each employer or recruiter - if you've made major changes, it is good to bring the old one with you, and possibly provide an updated one during the interview

5. Make sure recruiters do not present your resume to any company without your permission
- If your resume gets presented to a potential employer from more than one source (2 recuriters, or you and a recruiter), you get tossed out because the company doesn't want to have to pay the fee to either 2 recruiters, or to a recruiter who may or may not have presented your name first.

6. Create a linked in account, and start making contact with friends and colleagues. It isn't just for IT nerds any more. Check with your former customers as well as suppliers. You may get hit up by recruiters thru linked in as well.

7. If you are an "older worker" which means 40+, remove the dates you graduated high school, college, etc. Only put the last 10-15 years of relevant experience on your resume. Put your other experiences under a heading "other experience" and don't worry about putting company names, titles, etc. If they want to know more, they'll have to call you for an interview or at least a phone screening. Every no is one step closer to yes.

8. If you are a veteran, make sure you put a section for military service. The outplacement service recommended putting personal awards and decorations as part of your military section. I never received or earned any personal awards, so it is not an issue for me. I just put the ships I served on, and a brief description of my jobs.

I got my first two jobs when I got out of the Navy in part because I was a veteran. Pretty much all the later ones were because I knew someone in the company, and I asked if they knew anybody who might be hiring. Currently, 75-80% of jobs are found through friends and colleagues. 10-15% are found through recruiters, and the rest through traditional means. Make sure your friends and colleagues know you are looking for a job. The tough part is to keep a balance. You are not asking them for a job, just asking if they know someone who is hiring, and to keep an ear out for you. Also, don't give your resume to a friend to pass around.  See #5, and you want to make sure you send the most current or appropriate resume for the job.

I found my current job through a friend. I told him I was being laid off. I ended up going back to a company where I had worked at previously.  Not sure how long I'll stay, but at least I've got a relatively stable job, and am getting exposed to lots of current technology.

I'm looking for a part-time job (or full time) between now and when I leave for basic in April...I currently work in IT in Buckhead, but that position is "ending" at the end of this year for me. I've got a BS in criminal justice administration, and I've worked in sales and management positions in the past in the hospitality and car parts industries. At this point I'll take anything just to tie me over to pay off bills before I leave ($8-$10/hr)! If you need a resume', PM me and I'll provide one- I'm almost at the point to applying at McDonalds for a dish washing position...
