It looks like I'll be getting a job in Boone. I'm curious about the area, cheap places to live, places within an hours drive to go shooting, etc. I'll be visiting a buddy of mine up there shortly to get a lay of the land.

I lived in Boone and now live in Ashe county my suggestion is to look for places to live in the deep gap area or just across the county line in Ashe. These two areas are service by 4 lanes highways and it is quick and easy to get to town even in bad weather. The Cove creek, Vilas, Sugar grove is a nice place but is a nightmare to get to work in the mourning and home in the evening due to bumper to bumper traffic on 421 North between Boone and the state line.  As for shooting come join us as a member at Watauga gun club we have several pistol ranges, several trap ranges and a 300 yard rifle range. What type of work do you do that it brings you to Boone?

Watauga gun club is the only place I'm aware of. I'm jealous since I just moved from Boone and I miss it. Be sure to enjoy all the outdoor activities. Somewhere outside of Boone would probably be the cheapest, most of the housing within the town is geared toward college students and will be more expensive. I don't know specifically about Deep Gap prices, but the other poster is right about easier access by living on that side of Boone because of the highway. That said, I used to commute from Boone to the Linville area for work and it wasn't that bad most of the time, but I also wasn't normally commuting during rush hour.

Also, go eat at Taqueria El Paso. Best tacos ever.

I'll be working at the university, so I'm hoping to get an apartment within walking distance. I visited a buddy last week who gave me a tour of the downtown/university area. I'll probably be back up next week to look at apartments.

Good news, I just submitted a deposit for an apartment that meets my needs within three quarters of a mile from my office. Bad news, I will be homeless for one week.

Any advice on sedan accessible camping spots in the Appalachian mountains?

Here's a camp ground on 105 just out of Boone

http://flintlockcampground.com/

There is one on 105 a little farther out  in Foscoe

And one on 421 north out of Boone

Then there is the KOA

If I had to camp for a week it would be on the Blue ridge parkway at price park which is  close to Boone and Blowing rock with hiking trails and several lakes and streams to fish in.

If you like music, during the summer their is an outdoor concert almost every day in the area from Linville to Boone in the summer. Each place has its day. No one's turn is on Friday. I haven't been to all of them yet but heard they are fun. I've been to the Banner Elk and Boone concerts a few times and enjoyed them with my wife.

I second Price Lake for camping. I haven't camped there but have hiked it a lot. the sites seem pretty good

During rush hour Boone to Blowing Rock will be easier to drive than the sites up 105. 105 gets pretty backed up for an hour or so morning and after work  because it is the only main route in that direction and a lot of people commute from that area.

I think you know

Living most of my life in Lincoln County, I buy a lottery ticket once a week so I can have a vacation house in the Boone area.  I had a G/F who went to ASU (after high school and for her Masters) so we took several trips up there.
