A buddy and I just returned from a fishing trip to Weldon. While we were out there, he swears he saw a bunch of horses running through the woods on the far side of the Roanoke, just north of the rapids next to the boat ramp. A quick Google search brings up mentions of wild horses along the Outer Banks up to Assateague, MD, but I've never heard of wild horses along the upper Roanoke. Was he just seeing things? Are they moving upriver? Have they always been there?

Used to see large herds in Nevada.  The locals would try to trap them from time to time.  Put tasty feed out every evening in an open pen and then close it when you get enough in it.  They were pretty skittish, but you could rope the young ones and let the older ones go.
