I have US Cellular, and use one of the prepaid plans. I bought a used Galaxy S5 off Amazon. It works well here, but you'd have to check coverage maps for where you'd be using one. That's my sales pitch, for what works for me.

$37.01 per month

Unlimited talk and text

500MB high speed data

Unlimited 1x data after that

Pretty much ALL carriers are using proprietary hardware.. Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc etc...

Prepaid phones are on the same networks and so forth...

I stick with what I have, After using Nextel, Sprint, AT&T Mobile, and Cellular One (now Verizon) I'll just stick with Verizon....

Does it have a separate SD card and SIM? Might want to try replacing the SD card if it does. I had one that kept causing my android tablet to freeze.

We use Metro PCs which is T-mobile.  Another good option is Cricket who h is AT&T.

You can get 3 GB and unlimited everything else for $40 as a single line user.  Have a family member join as well and Metro will cut $5 per month per line.

I just went through the process of buying a new phone myself and there aren't many good "affordable" choices if you don't like huge screens.  I wanted a sub 5" screen and went with an Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 4.7".  It has been excellent thus far and at $149, did not break the bank.
