This spring there was a thread on mushrooms that had some discussion about growing shiitake mushrooms on logs.
This spring was the first harvest for mine and it lasted for several weeks before they finally stopped sprouting. Since then I had checked them only a few times as I did not think that they would fruit again until fall if then.
Yesterday I was back by my logs and to my amazement they were loaded with mushrooms...some were getting a bit old.
So here's a "heads up" to check your logs if you have any.

I'll bet they're really big logs too.

Yep, shame that thread got archived.  I meant to go in there and give it a bump but I was a couple days late.
Here's the link, if anybody's interested:
Mushrooms anyone?

I've got a really nice flush coming on right now

(sorry for the big pics, forgot to resize before uploading)

Strangely enough, seem to have somebody snackin' on them ahead of time
I wasn't expecting to have predator problems.  Probably a coon or possum, maybe a mouse.  Oh well, they didn't eat much.

Raising these guys is fun.

Do you sell the crop or use it yourself?

I wonder how the market prices compare to 10 years ago when the interest seemed to take off in Missouri.

I use some myself, but sell most. So far they've all been snapped up at $1/oz.  Not that I'm an old-timer at this or anything; this is the first year my logs have produced, and the logs in the pics are the only ones I have right now (well, a few more stubby little 16" logs that I put together to sell complete, but I haven't really harvested much off of them).  I'll definitely be cutting more logs this winter.
