Hi,

anybody have an idea what this snake is? It hissed, but didn't strike when it was pushed out of the way with a long pole.

thanks.

A hognose snake is the only one that I can think of that flattens out like that.

Eastern hognose snake

I identify snakes only during the autopsy  (and the cause of death is pretty clear, MULTIPLE gunshot wounds)

thanks, I think it must have been a hognose. It was worrying, since it was in a spot our 20month old loves to play in!

thanks for the reassurance it wasn't venomous :)

Leave it alone.  Or move it to another place.  No more mice.

Hognoses eat mostly toads.  No more warts!

There are cases of Hognose Snakes bites causing mild allergic reaction, similar to a wasp or hornet sting due to their slightly venomous saliva.  Never heard of a death caused by this but have seen swollen fingers and hands due to bites.

If you mess with them they will "play dead" by rolling over on their back with their mouth open.

If you put them back on their stomach, they will roll back over to stay "dead".  They are neat little snakes.

The first time I found a hognose in my area it startled me, I'd never seen one here in my 20 some odd years here.  Ours have a bit of red on them, but pretty much the same.  They do the flattening out thing (the also rattle their tails, if there is debris around it can sound like a rattler) until they realize you aren't backing away, then they play dead.  Like tongue out and all.  If you flip them over though, they will immediately roll back.  They are pretty neat.  The ones i've found have always put on a pretty good show the first time they roll over to play dead, after you flip them they normally just auto roll back updside down.

That's a good snake. I'd be happy to have him around.

I agree.  The best kind of snake is a dead snake, especially in my back yard!

I still say, the best way to identify them is during the Autopsy!

There was a report on the news this morning about a Cobra being found in an office building in Houston, TX.
