I am trying my hand at longer range shooting, but more precision stuff is newer to me.  Is there any of you guys in the KC area that would mind showing the ropes a bit, things to do, etc.?  I use a private range near me in Higginsville that can have guests or if you got something near I could meet.  You can email or IM me.  I appreciate it.  I plan on taking a class at some point, but would like to get a few more basics down first.  Thanks.

I would love to get a group together.  I would even pay some for someone around here.  Just looking for something informal/basics for a couple or three hours or such.

This group could get quite large quick and easy.

I shoot long range, well, all ranges actually, and try my damnedest to reload and shoot for precision. I am by no means an expert, but I am willing to help anyone, at any time I can, get into this frustrating, hair pulling genre of shooting.

Ok... This isn't long range, just 100 yds...

But, I was shooting at tiny dots. Does that count? (working up a load)

With this gun...

Here's 200, and this range goes to 600. Loads of fun!

If anyone wants to get started, or just get some experience or advise, hit me up. I am about a hour out of KC. I don't have loads of time on my hands (I teach CCW and DJ weddings on weekends, aside from my full time job), but am always willing to talk and do some shootin' stuff with others when I can.

Dude. I just noticed the Higginsville part of your post. I'm about 10 minutes from there. You live in this area? Wouldn't be that far of a drive if you do. The range I shoot at is near Marshall.

I have a membership at the Lafayette Gun Club right off of 13, turn off is right by the Higginsville HS.  I actually live in Richmond.  If there is a time that would be good, it looks like there are a few of us that would like to try something.  When are good times for you?

What range is that you are at?

I tried to get something like this together last year, but ran into problems with Marshall's 2 guests policy.

If we could find a time that worked I'd be happy to help so we could get 4 on the range. Though I'm more of a High Power guy than a scope guy.

OP. I'm also a member at Lafayette.   Their 200 m range is a great place to pick up the basics.

I can do most Sundays as long as I'm not teaching a class, and as long as it's not real early in the a.m. if I DJed the night before. I would just need a week or two to plan ahead. Weekday evenings while we still have some long days could work as well.

The range pictured is Bucksnort shooting club near Marshall.

Do you have a rifle you are currently using for long range?

A weeknight evening at Higginsville might work out good. It would be kind of a halfway meeting point.

Yeah, I think we spoke last year, things just never came together. I am all for either range, although, I think bucksnort would offer a more "peaceful" environment for what we are trying to do. I've never been to Higginsville, but I've heard it can get busy.

The matches at bucksnort close the range down from the Wednesday through the weekend. There are a couple or Sundays this month that could work.

I am not sure how busy Lafayette is.  I usually go on a Friday as I have every other one off, so it is almost always empty and have the range to myself.  I probably could do an evening myself.

I do have a rifle I just started using for longer range, I have a Mossberg MVP LR in 556 and an AR-10.  I have a Rem 700 AAC-SD, but it is not range ready yet.  I don't mind sharing with other guys if some of you all don't have a longer range gun.

Depending on if you want to do a group -

I'm available most weeknights & generally all day Friday & Saturday. Though Sundays would be very tough for me.

Op - I think the most important question is what exactly are you wanting to learn?

If you just need zeros at various distances, that's easy enough to do with some range time.

If you want to learn how to range a target using mils or whatever youre  using I'd hit up YouTube first. Like I said I'm not a scope guy, so I wouldn't be much help there. But if you're still looking at scopes I'd look hard at the Bushnell Elite Tactical with the G2 reticle. I've been impressed by what I've seen with them. If I were to transition to tactical/sniper matches (which Ive been thinking about doing at some point) I'd use one of their scopes.

In my experience, there is no learning how to read the wind.  I just feel it out with instincts and by watching my shots. Everyone I've met who is decent at judging the wind all do it the same way.  There are ways to measure it accurately, but you need to know your variables so well that you just about need to be a meteorologist to do it.

If you want to learn how to shoot small groups at distance, learn how to shoot small groups close in. There's really no secret to shooting  long distances - it's all about the fundamentals. If you don't have the fundamentals down, you're going to know it really quick at 600.

Been wanting to get into this for while but didn't have my loads finalized until this week. I finally was able to chronograph and build some drop charts to get an idea of how my rifle should perform at longer ranges not that its going to follow the chart but at least I have an idea. I know JAD762 tried to get something going last year but I wasn't able to make it due to kids and my loads not being finalized. I would like to meet with you guy's if you don't mind for some chances at going beyond 100 yard mark which is all Lake City goes to.

I've been trying to work up a load but I've ran into some other time sucking stuff. Would love to shoot and I'd settle for the Gold Medal Match that I bought for the stand in ammo.

All of this. Are you wanting to learn fundamentals, equipment, external ballistics/dope, precision reloading, data collection?

Knowing what you are wanting to get out of this beforehand will help make the most of the time. Maybe just getting together and doing some shooting would be a good starting point. Either way, whether it's a group thing or just a one on one, I'd be more than happy to help out.

I've been thinking of joining Pioneer. They have a 200 yard range, which is twice as far as Lake City where I usually go.

I tried Lake City a couple of times, but it is so loud in there.  With ear plugs and muffs on, it is only barely tolerable.  Plus, the range people start to get on my nerves.  I am glad I am at a private one and almost always have it to myself.

Hey all,

Saw this thread and wanted to hop on the bandwagon.

I've recently relocated to KC from Oregon, where I had just started to put together a precision AR in order to take my marksmanship seriously (having gotten into firearms a few years ago and only messed around with various frivolous purchases since then).

I've never shot further than 200 yards, and that was only one session about nine months ago.

I'm waiting for the next Appleseed to come up this fall, but am very interested in tagging along on any shooting outings. I'm really clueless here and am eager to learn.

Let me buy your ammo, gas, or lunch in exchange.

Also interested in finding a place to try my hand at some coyote hunting/calling, but I feel I need some better fundamentals before I *really* jump into that.

I'll be keeping my eye on the thread here, but feel free to PM or email me.

I too was looking into appleseed for this fall and they're all scheduled on the other ends of the state.  Nearest was some 3hrs away near Springfield.  Think I'd like to sell a kid to purchase some .22lr ammo for that.

Ok guys. I am willing. Like I said, I have limited availability, Some Sundays and weeknights after 5:00 are good (days are getting shorter though). Once the wedding season lets up, Saturday afternoons will open up a bit.

The Bucksnort schedule has a few weekends free of comps this month and August. Every weekend is booked with comps in September, with one comp and a range workday in October. When a comp is scheduled for a weekend, the range is closed from Wednesday before for range prep and practice.

At Bucksnort there are two different ranges running parallel to each other. A 100 yard, covered firing line range, and a the long range, with 200, 300, and 600 yard firing lines. The 100 yd and long ranges are right next to each other, and the 600 yd firing line sits at about the 50 yd line of the 100 yd range. With the range being set up like this, only one firing line can be used at a time, which kind of sucks if someone is already shooting at a distance other than what you want, when you get there. So there is no guarantee that we'd get to shoot at any particular distance.  That being said, this is not an extremely busy range, I'd say about a 50/50 chance of someone being there before us, and if they are, most guys are pretty good at sharing the range.

I prefer to shoot in the fall and winter. The range isn't as busy, and I don't sweat off 5 pounds in one shooting session. I will go any time I have the chance though, because my chances are few and far between these days, and if I have the excuse of hosting one or two of you gentleman for a few hours, I could make this more of a priority.

So hit me up, I.M. me and surly we can work something out.

Where is Bucksnort?

And if we did this would this be more of a 7.62 thing or 5.56 thing? If that even matters.

Bucksnort is in southern Saline Co, south east of Marshall.  I-70 to exit 78, 65Hwy north.  North on 65Hwy to state road U.  Down state road U to county road 220(which is now called something else due to the 911 thing Saline Co started).  Follow 220 to a T, turn left on county road 215(with a different name) about 3/4 mile until you see the gate and the covered shooting station.

I used to have a membership, now I regret not renewing a few years back.

Really? I usually double up anyway, but I never had an issue. Though I am shooting .223, vs something bigger like a .308 or something.

Never had a problem with the ROs. Just follow the rules.

FWIW, I'd be bringing a plain ole boring 5.56. Got to start with the basics, at least for me.
