It's just a little ole thing. Just what everyone needs to go with there M35a2, a bigger truck. It's a 1970 Kaiser Jeep XM818. Powered by a Cummins nhc250 with no turbo, Spicer 5 speed, 2 speed transfer case, Rockwell axels, 20,000 pound winch, & 49" tires on combat rims. It was going through rebuild when it was scrapped out, so the entire drive line is new. Like has 60 mile on it total. Except the blasted fuel pump. Needs some work here and there, & in serious need of a paint job.  But it's my latest project, needed another one of those like a hole in the head.

And our M35a2 with one of our M105 trailers

Thank you. I enjoy sharing, & they are fun trucks to mess around with ( not counting driving one from Springfield to Topeka and back last weekend ). Heck, maybe I can get others into the hobby.

I've always wanted one, but have always been intimidated by buying one that's pretty much an unknown from the govt and hoping to drive it away without major problems

I bought both trucks & trailers from individuals. I'm not a big fan of buying without touching first. Scour craigslist and the military vehicle hobby sites like steelsoldiers, or mvpa. Ebay is also popular, & a good source for parts. If you can get the opportunity to drive one before you start shopping, to help get a better idea of what you might like. Go for it.

Paid $8,000 for this one. We've got plans for it later on.

New pump. So sexy. Runs like a champ now.

The nhc250 Cummins. 855 cubic inch. 250ish horse.

The no frills government cab. This is the deluxe model with spring seats, which I hate.

With the deuce

And the kidlets. They're both almost 11.  Before anyone says it, yes the porch is a mess. It does double duty as a garage. I so need to move.

Keep us posted on this please, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the 250 Cummins, I didn't know anyone built a Diesel engine of this size anymore without a turbo. I've heard of guys adding turbo's to them but would like to know how they perform without it.
Oh, and is that the .gov issued anti theft system I see in the pic of the interior? (Chain welded to seat frame)

Enjoy!

Tagging because I'm going to OTC for diesel tech and I'm sure I can learn something here.

The nhc250 is an obsolete engine. It did have a very long service life, so there are lots of parts around still. Some did come with a turbo & some companies do offer a retro fit turbo. It ain't cheap though. The better bet is to hit up a bone yard & pull the parts from a tubo engine. It seems to be a solid motor though. I mainly drove cargo & tractors in the army, like the M931a2 with the 8.3 Cummins turbo diesel. They were real nice at higher elevations where the air is thinner.

So far, this motor seems good. Haven't pulled a load yet though. Hopefully that's gonna change in the next week or two. I will say that the fuel system on these trucks is just flat ass stupid. The 250 is reeeeeeeeally sensitive to air & it pretty much a vacum system. With the factory tank selector & scads of fuel lines there are way to many places for it to suck in air. That was half my problem. The other half is that the truck sat for a long time. The seals in the injection pump had dried out and were sucking air as well. Now I've got the new pump and no tank selector. I'm plumbing in a transfer pump from the passenger tank to the drivers, with a manual switch in the cab. This way there's about twenty fewer spots it can suck air & there's only going to be one rubber line in the feed system. Still a work in progress.

The chain is the anti theft system. The fud didn't always waste our money billion dollar crap, when a ten dollar chain & eighteen dollar lock will work just as well. I need to get by the lock smith to get a new key made.

Interesting, I didn't know of any 250's that were turbo'd. Good to know they'll handle the boost tho. How heavy a load you plan on pulling with this one?

Glad to see the .gov saving some money on the anti-theft device tho!

Not planning on anything to huge. I can't afford the 80,000 pound plates and permits, and etc  just yet. I do plan on starting a hotshot company at some point before long. Which is the reason we bought this truck to begin with. I talk to a guy in South Carolina who has a few M818's he uses to transport fuel. So I know it's possible.

In the mean time I found this the other day & it will most likely be mine this weekend. I'm going to convert it into a camper over the next couple months, and if it doesn't pan out I can get my money back out of it in scrap. This should look real familiar to those of us who went to basic at Ft. Wood.

Been a while on this, but it's running like a champ & has become a daily driver. Getting there slowly but surely.

Got a big ass spare to fit on a big ass truck.

With an overloaded M105 trailer. 6,000-7,000 pounds of engines and assorted crap

I like where you're going with this Matt. I do love the idea of a king cab deuce, but I always thought if money were no object, and I was building my own that I'd extend the frame to give room for the extra cab space instead of robbing it from the bed. I understand most people wouldn't want to add 4 feet of length to an already long vehicle, but I always thought it would just look more "correct"

Good luck with the project, and keep us posted!

Some do extend the frame or use a m36 truck. I've had the opportunity to drive one & it's just to long for city driving. Turning radius is worse than a 72 Cadillac.
