In Chad's thread a few people mentioned wanting to get together to learn how to do some longer range shooting on the KC side of the state.
Now, I'm no super long range shooter. I've never been in the .mil & I'm not in the benchrest hall of fame. But, I've been blessed to have longer ranges open to me & decent enough instruction that I've become pretty handy out to 600 yds. If some folks want to get together sometime in the coming couple of months I'd be willing to get you into my range, give you some basic tips, and help you develop zeroes at the 200, 300, and 600 yard lines. Just say so in this thread and we'll start working out when we can do it and what you'll need to bring with you. Just a word of wisdom, shooting stuff far away is no harder than shooting stuff close up. The wind will play with you, but you can work through that. Honestly, the biggest factor in shooting at distance is the fundamentals that you should have gotten down long ago. If your trigger pull sucks or you're shooting positions are unnatural or you ignore your breathing, follow through, cheek weld, and everything else it will be magnified on the 600 yard line & you won't be happy. Another thing mentioned was some basic formulas for long range shooting. I use two basic ones that are good enough to get me on paper, though they won't put you in the X ring. If you can tolerate the accent and the metric system, this guy explains it well. (Would a member embed this for me please?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CSHt1-ShL4 |

I'm in, 100 yards just not that fun anymore but I stay at it for load development. Ahhh whom I'm kidding I just love to shoot but I do need to stretch myself and learn new things.

I shoot out to 600 fairly regularly, but I'd still be in to come out and shoot with you guys, and help out if needed...As long as I don't have to work, DJ a wedding, or teach a CCW class that day
I would love to go further. Magnifying my issues would help me solve the issues. A long time ago for me is only a couple of years.
I'm interested, but don't know where to go for that kind of distance. Best I can do is 100yds.
Depending on location, date & time I'm interested.
Any specific equipment suggestions before we get underway? Optics? Caliber? |
I would definitely be interested depending on time, date, & location. As much advanced notice as possible would be appreciated for planning purposes. Plus-it'd have to be a weekend for me.
I've got a Rem. 700 sps in .308 I need to get dialed in. I've got DOPE for 100 and 200 yards but that's it. I haven't found a location to push it farther than that. Very interested. |
I am very interested in this. Would love to get my 243 out to 400 before I go antelope hunting
Definitely interested. I have to get a new scope and get sighted in before I can go though.... end of May...

Hey guys, I'm glad to see that's there's a lot of interest in this.
The location would be at Bucksnort shooting club. The club is off of hwy 65 between the I 70/65 interchange and Marshall. I'm going to sit down with my calendar and the club calendar tomorrow. Since the club calendar is already made for the year & it's too late to reserve it, we will run the chance of having to share the range with other members. Though to be honest in the 4 years I've been a member there, there's only been once that I've run into another shooter. I'll also start thinking about a suggested gear list too. I mostly shoot irons at that distance, but any sighting method that is repeatable will do. Whatever you do, please bring a rifle that youve zeroed and are familiar with so we can focus on the shooting. The most important gear you're going to need is a decent rifle and good ammunition. I've found that once you pass the 300/400 yd mark, match grade ammo becomes a must. ETA: Sierra bullets is just south of the range in Sedalia. I don't know their weekend schedule, but if there's interest we can see if they'll give us a tour of the plant and/or take advantage of their seconds bins. |

Hey JAD762, empty your message inbox please. I need to PM you about bucksnort.

I am in the SW corner of the state......
I have been to Bucksnort a few times for High Power matches, I would love to join you if I am available, I am interested in receiving some critique and instruction on my shooting. |

(Would a member embed this for me please?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CSHt1-ShL4 View Quote I like the concept and the explanation. It really helps understand some basics. I think a drawback might be that he uses a constant velocity, which will cause it to start to deviate some from the real world (unless you're shooting in a vacuum, which in that case you should hold your breath). As flight time increases, the deviation would increase more. For example, if I shoot my Hornady Critical Duty 9mm+P at a 100 yd target, using the calculation with the specified muzzle velocity, I'd have to aim about 14" high. With the specified 100 yd velocity, it would need to be 18" high. But, if I'm really hitting the paper at 100 yd with my G19, I really wouldn't give a crap about the 4" difference. The average velocity would probably put it in between the two anyway. Wow! I must be ready for 200 yd with a G19 ... |

I would like to join in on this as well. Tired of Pigeon Hill
Damn I'd love to say I'm in and come up nawth and shoot with you yankees. But my Rem. 700 is in pieces, and probably will be for a while.
Maybe next time, Hopefully there is one! Ruckus |

I would like to attend if it works with my schedule. I'm admitedly a pretty crappy shot even at 100 yards, but I am always open to learning better technique. I fully understand part of my problem is not enough time on the range, just like seat time with becoming a better driver.
If some of you wanted to get the basics down at a 100 we could do a range day at my place. Kinda work out the kinks before going at 400&500. I'm sure several would be up for coming out to help.
Depending on timing, I'd be in for all of this. I recently broke my leg so I can't walk on it yet

View Quote This would probably be the best for myself. I've just recently started wanting to get accurate, and am learning more about shooting in general besides just having fun pulling the trigger for the hell of it. |

Little late to the party, but Ihave just started scratching the surface of long range, and would love to learn more.
Schedule permitting, I'm in. |
So, where are you all located at? I am about an hour from there. This sounds interesting.
We have 2000 yards near Columbia. Steel from 200 to 1950. People will have to show they can shoot before going past 500.

Private. myself , 2 ballplayers, two guys who sell a few cars around STL and a midget that walks with a limp . We take people from time to time.

Went to Lake City today to work on my 168gr A-Max load and shot this at the 100 yard mark If it pans out it should be good the long range shoot.

Test the scope see if it dials true and come on out. View Quote I have a Bushnell elite that was given to me in the shop right now getting fixed. The Weaver on there now has specks on the glass and the tracking seems ok but not true, just don't know the amount of error in the tracking yet as I'm still working on this load. I'll be loading up some more with this recipe to confirm this is a go to load before I take it beyond the 100 mark. Trust me I want to get beyond the 200 yard mark, just need to make sure my equipment is good enough so the only blame on a bad shot is the loose nut behind the trigger |
Nice shooting NFAslinger, I was hoping that my load might make it to a 1000 but the JBM ballistics calculator shows that I go subsonic at 950 with the speed 2542 fps @ 46* from my 16" barrel. I'm under the impression that the A-max bullet can handle the transonic flight better than the 168 SMK but its all theory to me since I can't shoot that far. When I get this load confirmed and the new glass mounted I'll give you an IM and make the 2 hour journey east to answer all these questions I have in my head
I live in Saint Louis. If that is closer and you have questions.
Ditch the 168's. I shoot a KAC sr25 16 ecc to 1000 and further all the time . Not much of ass left on it but all rounds can be put on torso size piece of steel with ease. Right ammo , optics and open mind is all it takes.

Bob message sent with phone number. Messaging on this site sucks.
