Anyone know the location of one? I can easily get that distance AFTER crops are out, but that will not be for some time, and the Ozarks 3-gun is coming up where there is a 500 yard shot. Would like to get some practice in with the .223 and new scope before going out there. Wouldnt mind a preliminary stretch of the new 762 OBR's legs either.

Bucksnort out in Marshall is about the closest range of that size and you can get out to 600 there.

I think Powder Creek has 300 but I don't think they allow Centerfire there anymore.

I can probably steer you toward a place that is private that you can get 600-800...
But it is a bit of a drive for you.

How far is a bit of a drive. Looking to go once or twice between now and the beginning September, so a moderate drive isn't an issue.

I have 400 yards at my private range, just would like to make sure I can easily tag a 500 yard target around 12-14" or so square in 1-2 shots with 69gr match ammo.

Of course....a little fun at 6-800 yards with some 168gr FGMM sure sounds like fun too!

Bucksnort is closed to the public except for competitions.

There was some stuff malicuosly shot up last year. Consequence of incident caused board to freeze membership.

Lucky for you, possibly. There's two of us in htf with membership.

I haven't gotten to Bucksnort since last fall. My rifles haven't been fired this year and I'm ready for a break from pistol.

We need to wait for it too cool off a bit if you have interest.

Who said there is a 500 yard shot? Last year the farthest was 250ish. The year before that there was a 480, but it was a huge. There was a lot of controversy over that one for the ability to call hits.

Was looking ALL over trying to find info and somewhere found that they could have targets out to 500 yards and slug targets. Just tryin to prepare for any and all possible scenarios. Better to be prepared for what isn't there than to walk into a match completely unprepared for something.

Good planning on your part. We did shoot slugs out to 125 yards!

Looks like I need to set some USPSA targets up at varying distances out to 125 yards and see what I can do with some slugs in my shotgun.

Just curious....what choke do you have in your gun when you shoot slugs?

That depends on what other targets are on that stage. Ideally you should know how they impact with all your chokes. Mine do well with modified and light modified. IC shifts to the right a little.

With stages that have slug targets you're still going to have to engage shot targets before or after the slugs. So just use your normal choke. I tend to use light modified but have used modified in the past.

right now I have an Extra Full choke and Improved Modified choke that I use. I do really well with the IM choke on everything in close (like a rifle with it), still knockdown steel at distance, and do well with clay pigeons using it. The Extra Full I only typically break out for stages like the shaky platform/spinner stage at MW3G....to rock that evil bastard of a spinner without much other to shoot at with the shotgun. I also used the EF choke on the 1st stages of the match that had all the pistol and shotgun targets close to each other to minimize my chance of knocking the pistol steel over.

I have never shot alot of slugs. I just picked up a case of Winchester Ranger low recoil, and some Federal low recoil to try out. I figured the Extra Full choke would be too tight for a slug, and not real sure if I should drop back to a Modified shoke to shoot slugs. Concern was the choke being too tight and pullilng on the choke threads causing issues maybe.

DO NOT use a slug through an extra full. You wont screw up your threads, you'll overpressure your barrel causing a bulge or burst.

Like I said, modified it the tightest constriction I have ever shot a slug through. Improved modified MIGHT be OK, but doing it would make my butthole pucker. I wouldn't personally do it.

If you're going to be serious about three gun just go to Midway USA and order a Carlsons Light Modified choke for your shotgun ($29.99). All the big names use LM, and since switching to LM two years ago I can say its probably the best all around choke for the game. In fact its the tightest constriction I've used in the past 2 years.

As for slugs, don't waste a ton of money on them. I use the cheapest Winchester slugs from Walmart and hit all of Ozark's slug targets on the first shot last year - even the "long distance" ones that everyone complained about. Get a handful of boxes, figure out where they shoot & you'll be fine. I think Ozark had 3 slug targets last year & maybe 5 the year before that. Plus the slug targets are USPSA sized silouettes. There's not that many & they're not that hard.

Midwest is the only match I've ever been to that has trap thrown fliers - Ozark never has so I wouldn't worry about them. Ozark does usually have one really long shotgun stage. I think it was near 50 rounds last year. So focus a lot on loading the shotgun & bring plenty of shell holders - I had to borrow some last year.

Sounds like I need more shell holders!

I was worried about the IM, and wasn't planning to try the EF. Have LM and M extended tubes in my midway cart right now. I originally shot my first 3-gun with a cylinder bore pump and was able to knock all the steel over, just couldnt spin that spinner....so I bought a JM930 and the IM and skeet were in stock, so I ordered them. Skeet sits in the safe, IM has been in the gun 99.9% of the time since, and EF was recently added to the range bag for specialty use only, at its worked well for its intended purpose.

I will likely add 2-3 4x4 shell carriers to the mix, that would put me at 48-56 on my belt, 9 in the gun, 2 in a safariland holder on the belt if I want, and if I can start with 1-2 in my hand....hopefully plenty for that!

If slugs were on USPSA silhouettes....I have a stack of the cardboard ones and cn take shots out to 125 yard on my range (currently set up for 3-gun practice btw ) at the USPSA targets to see how I do. My JM930 just has a fiber optic front sight, so I wont be able to sight in, but should be able to remember where to hold I guess.

That skeet choke will come in handy when you have a lot of close steel or static clays.
