There is a fairly good chance I'll be relocated by the company from the ATL area to the Birmingham area. My dad is currently in Trussville, and I went to high school at Hoover right as they opened up the district. I'll most likely end up in the Pelham/Alabaster region (at least on that side of town), but not ruling out Trussville too. Schools are my primary focus. I will have kids in 2, 8, and 10th grades. What school districts should I avoid? My office is in Hoover. Housing will most likely end up in the 175-200k market. If I move, it will be over the summer when school is out. What areas should I focus on and/or avoid?

In the systems you names, you'll be fine. I like north of B'ham because of traffic. You're from Atlanta, so you are use to crappy traffic.

[#2]
I'm 25 miles from our ATL office, and it is anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. I drove from Trussville to Hoover (Riverchase), 22.5 miles, 30 minutes. The traffic here is one of the biggest motivations to move.

I live in moody. Love it. Would recommend. On phone sorry to be short

Did you think of Mountain Brook or Oak Mountain?
I'd avoid Briarwood Christian as traffic down 280 would be abysmal during rush hour, the only reason. Homewood, Spain Park would be good choices. |

Oak Mtn. is superb too (Indian Springs especially) but you have to time your trips on I65 to avoid the inevitable traffic jam. |

Where is your job going to be.?
North of Bham I would say Gardendale north to the county line. I 65 to Bham is not to bad in the am. East I would say moody to springville. Traffic on 20 can suck. South, alabaster is good. 280 sucks. Homewood is very nice but $$$ , Good luck |

Office is in Hoover/Riverchase. Homewood, Vestavia, and Mt.Brook are above my paygrade. Trting to stay out of JeffCo if possible.

My daughters went to Oak Mountain. Good Schools, minimal issues. When my oldest graduated in 2008, 90% of the students went on to secondary schools, and 5% went into the military. That's pretty good odds.
Oak Mountain, Helena, Spain Park, Mountain Brook and Vestavia should all be good. Homewood and Hoover City are OK to a lesser extent. But I'm not sure what the home selection would be in the price range you're looking at. |

You will be fine with Pelham, Helena or Alabaster.
All good school systems and all the cities in that area are ranked in top safest cities in AL. |

St. Clarie county has much to offer. Very affordable housing, easy commute ... less of the Jefferson county trash and high taxes.
My son just built a new construction home in Odenville. For the price range you mentioned you can have a very nice home. I live in a small pocket of Irondale. Nice area but it comes with the Jefferson county headaches... When you negotiate your relocation...just remember your taxes will be higher. 10% sales tax does make a difference.. |

It has a lot of the amenities of living in town but it's far enough out that you don't have to deal with all of the nonsense. For example, I went to pay property tax and get a tag for a car the other day. I was in and out in 20 minutes. The staff is polite, professional and they work hard. The only drawback was a 20 min drive to Pell City BUT, I still came out far ahead because I would have waited 3x as long as I would have in Birmingham. |

Do know that anywhere South of Homewood you need to add three times the off peak drive time to the peak "rush hours" drive times. The traffic is very heavy in general.

I'm not too concerned with rush hour. There have been many, many, many times where my commute was an average of 13mph...for 25 miles. I like the Moody/Odenville area, and have been through there a few times.

Odenville/Moody schools aren't BAD, per se. They are just fine, but they aren't Blue Ribbon/President's Circle schools like Mtn. Brook or Vestavia. I don't think that a kid will come out poorly for having attended St. Clair County schools especially if the parents are involved. |

if you will be heading into bham during rush hour coming from the north is best for traffic followed by the east side of town. leaving bham during rush our will likely suck for every direction but north. istates e,w,s are routinely closed off or severely blocked by wrecks on a regular basis. 4 days in a row here last week.
if schools are your concern from your list i'd look to trussville. keep this in mind, the shit is crawling outside of bham now at an epic rate. even homewood and hoover are no longer exempt from it. violent crime is on a serious increase currently. there is a good reason bham no longer makes it crime stats public. |
