In many ways, Alabama has been the poster state for the gun-nut movement: Bemoaning any and all regulations and buying into every dumb argument imaginable.

I have never understood how it is that so many people – in some cases, relatively intelligent people – are sucked in by the bravado and simple-minded nature of the anti-gun regulation arguments. Because they literally make no sense, and are filled with everyday contradictions.

For example: “Criminals won’t obey laws.”

Then why do we have drug laws? Why are you harassing me when I buy sinus medicine? Can I scream at the poor girl working the counter at CVS about Thomas Jefferson rolling over in his grave if he only knew I had to show ID to get a box of Zyrtec D?

Those sinus medicine restrictions do work, of course.

And make no mistake about it, the gun regulations do deter crime and criminals.

In 1994, Connecticut implemented the exact types of regulations Obama has called for – expanded background checks, extended checks to private sales and requiring safety training. Gun murders have fallen by 40 percent since.

Look at England. Look at Australia. Look at Japan. Laws work.
