THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
For those in the morgan, madison, limestone area (or others) that frequent Swan Creek WMA's range, please feel free to come up and say hey if you see me out there (actually going this afternoon).

I'm not hard to spot. Just look for this silver xterra covered in offroad and magpul stickers with a big cow plow winch bumper.

Could also be out there with another member who drives a lifted blue xterra. I won't mention his name as he might be leary of association.

I haven't been out to Swan Creek, since the range guy non enforcement started making up his own rules about target stands all needing to be 100% cardboard. If you could take some pictures of their current posted rules and post them later, thanks.

I will get some pics up tonight or tomorrow hopefully but posted signs state no trash, take targets with you when you leave and no steel or wood. They want everyone to use only PVC framed targets. Now Kelly had a pretty intense talk with this guy about the last rule and either he hasn't been frequenting the range much or they aren't enforcing it because I'm seeing more metal and wood target frames showing back up. They've added spent brass buckets to hopefully encourage people to clean up their brass at the end of the day and the past two times I have been out there, there was a couple who were walking up and down the line picking up brass that shooters didn't want. They have also added steel posts at the bank with lines to hang targets from for people who don't bring a frame/holder.

I still use a wire frame holder without incident or complaint from any of the other shooters. I plan to make a simple pvc frame as a back up in case I get any guff from other shooters or that guy but until then, I'm sticking with my wire.

I was surprised at how much cleaner it has been lately. No more junk left on the lanes like there used to be. The amount of trash has greatly decreased. Unfortunately you still have the jackass shooting 25 yd targets with a pistol on the 100yd range and the occasional moron with a slidefire burping up the bank.

I've just been going to Skyline, since it is about the same distance from my house.

Yeah, I called montgomery back when the idiot said no steel or wood. My dad and I have the metal target bases that use 1x2's to attach your carboard target to. They are just like these: https://www.targetbarn.com/newstore2.asp?CAT=TARGETS&SubCat=TARGETSTANDS

The guy in montgomery said he sees no problems with us using this type of target stands and frames. Plus I don't think one enforcement person has written a ticket for someone using that frame.

There was a thread about this 5-6 months ago how it was useless arguing with the guy that made the rules because he was a retarded idiot.

I go out there on Mondays..

Usually not many people, and since I am off on Mondays its alot easier than going after work with only an hour or two left of daylight.
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most.

So anybody with a Slidefire stock and/or a registered machine gun should not be able to shoot there?

Sorry... should have clarified, not meant that way at all. Meant it as a "moron who owns a slidefire". Sorry about that. It wasn't meant as if anyone who owns one is a moron. Two weeks ago I was there and this joker at the end of the range was just indiscriminantly spraying the bank, the ground, pretty much whatever was in front of him. He seemed to be more entertained by the rate of fire than actually trying to hit a target. I actually shot with a guy Saturday who had one who ACTUALLY could put rounds on target.

I apologize, just an example of poor word choice on my part.

ETA: Before anybody jumps my case over the "jackass" comment, that IS something I do have a problem with. I've seen a great number of ricochets from shooters doing this that clear the banks which is what got that range scrutinized and almost closed down. There are houses in line with the firing lanes and ricochets still carry enough velocity to travel a long distance.

Back to the point though, Saturday I noticed a few more steel stands out there so I guess people are either aware that they are no longer enforcing it (signs are still up against it) or they choose not to use pvc (which I don't blame them).

Also, the past two times I've been there, a green bonneville (I think it was) was there with a family who collects the brass. Pretty much anything larger than .22lr. The guy has a business (name escapes me at the moment) and he sells bulk brass to reloaders for cheap. Can't say if it is tumbled/clean brass or just in the condition as it was found. They are really courteous and always ask nearby shooters about the brass on the ground before picking it up. They have really been keeping the firing lines cleaned up.

I have observed first hand someone firing a pistol while someone was still down range. He got two quick shots off before I started yelling "Cease Fire" Repeatly.

This is my reply to the Egnima's comment "So anybody with a Slidefire stock and/or a registered machine gun should not be able to shoot there?"
The rules say any legally owned firearms. I have a Machine Gun (M16) that I shoot as often as I can, and have done so a lot out there at Swan Creek. Tony Gouch (before he died) and other NFA dealers/manufactures would hold MG shoots out there at Swan Creek.

I like to shoot the M16 on the 50 yard range because I know I can keep all the rounds into the back stop easily, would be even easier on the 25 yard range, but rarely will I shoot it at the 100 yard range. I have had no complaints from anyone while shooting, most always ask to shoot it, and I normally will as long as they don't seem like an idiot.

I think I have seen you out there before. Do you have an AOW double barrel shotgun as well?

I have not seen anyone complain about f/a either and I have been a few times when Malcolm (local dealer) had all of his toys out there for any and all to shoot.

And, glad you will let others try some M16 goodness. I always have the 13 year old kids ask about my AR when im at Swan Creek since it has an EoTech on it, like they saw in xxxxx video game. As long as there parents approve I will let them burn up a mag of ammo. More than worth the ammo to me. Expand the hobby.....

Yes, but it's a Side by Side 20 GA SBS not an AOW.

No problem.

It took me a while to learn how to control my AK Slidefire. Fortunately I was able to spare myself the embarrassment by shooting at a friends farm.

I wonder if it was one of you guys who let my nephew shoot an M16 a couple of years ago. I believe it was the same person who owns a ma deuce mounted on a utility trailer (his name always escapes me). Whoever it was, thanks. My nephew to this day still talks about how much fun it was to shoot on full auto. To quote the owner "here you go son... now dig a ditch".
