Howdy Easterners. Got a quick question.

My parents are in S.Maryland, and have a friend that recently experienced a death in the family. There are firearms that need to be passed down.

What is the protocol for that in your state (assuming there is not trust/will) ? Does the intended recipient need to have them transfered via LGS for background checks?

I have now idea how that works out there. Thanks for looking.

EDIT: I already know what some of you are going to say...probally not an option.

They need to fill out a Form 77R for any handguns within 5 days of the transfer. It's no charge.

It's treated as a gift for MD Code:

  (2) If the regulated firearm is a gift to the purchaser's spouse, parent, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, or child, the recipient shall:

     (i) complete an application to purchase or transfer a regulated firearm; and

(ii) forward the application to the Secretary within 5 days after receipt of the regulated firearm.

  (3) The Secretary shall waive the $ 10 application fee required under § 5-118(a)(2) of this subtitle for a gift purchased in accordance with this subsection.
