Anyone following this? It recently passed the house, and is in-progress in the senate.

I'm glad this is the most critical issue facing our state and that the legislature is addressing it promptly.
I've heard there's some question as to whether or not it'll make it through the Senate, so we'll see -- it'd be nice to be able to buy local on Sundays. |
|
They were talking about it on the KTLK morning show.
Hopefully it passes and gov goofy signs it |
|
About damn time. Next step, allow liquor sales in grocery stores without making people jump through the stupid separate entrance BS like at Costco/Trader Joes. Oh and while they're at it, get rid of that god awful 3.2 crap, we're one of only 3 states left that sell it. And they could stop nannying everyone and allow Everclear too, having to pick it up in ND is stupid (it's for a mix).
|
|
The state senate is debating it now.

I think they still have to reconcile the House and Senate versions and vote on the combined bill though right?
|
|
Yes, the house could pass the version the senate passed with the later start time, or a committee will have to hash out an agreement and both chambers could have to vote on a compromise bill again. It isn't a done deal, but at this point I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. I don't know why these idiots introduced bills with different start times.
|
|
10am vs 11am, is that the only difference? I'd prefer 10 but whatever it's past time to just get it passed.

I fully expect that in a debate about 10:00 vs. 11:00 some rep or senator will say something about needing to be mindful of the time the Lutheran churches get out (except for those days they're having their green bean and tater tot hotdish and green jello potlucks).
Even better than Sunday sales is the news that Dogfish Head will start selling their beers here in late March. No more road trips to Hudson to stock up. |

Finding a good IPA among the local craft beer is like searching for a needle in a haystack; I've been burned so much I usually just grab a sixer of good old Summit Saga. |

I still can't believe we have these stupid blue laws on books still.
There is no point... Going into a bar and getting bent is somehow "safer" than grabbing a case and sitting at home on a Sunday afternoon? |

Looks like Surdyk's got a jump on being the first for Sunday sales.

I heard from someone who would know that Surdyk (like many of the established liquor stores) opposed Sunday sales. So it sounds like he's jumping on the bandwagon and trying to look like a good guy after realizing he was actually going to have to pay staff, utilities, etc. on Sundays anyway. |

Now surdyk's is getting their license pulled for 30 days in June. Surdyk shot himself (and all his employees) in the foot.

open for 1 day illegally, get closed for 30 days and fined...
come here illegally, get coddled and various social programs thrown at you.... |

I wonder if it will stick. Surdyk seems to be the kind of guy who might try to whip up some public support to make the city minions uncomfortable. |
|
The Surdyk family started their business in 1934...Interesting year, LOL. Supposedly the Haskells family were Saint Paul bootleggers during prohibition, and they "started" their business in 1934 too.
Surdyk would have got more style points if he did a semi-public speakeasy thing that day. |

My only problem with Sunday sales is that it just will cost more money. Sales will be spread over 7 days instead of 6 and more people(that show up irregularly at best)will have to be hired. In the end it is a lose for liquor store owners unless they are border stores.

For the Dogfish Head fans, both Red Cows (Lyndale and Selby) have 60-Minute, 90-Minute, and a few other things on tap as of last Monday.

There was no way the legislature would have kept that law with MN hosting the Superbowl next year. The state would have been even more of a national laughingstock than we already are, and considering who our politicians are that would be saying something.

Minneapolis City Council rejects Surdyk's deal, insists on tougher penalty
A 10-day suspension of Surdyk’s liquor license and $6,000 fine are not stiff enough penalties after Surdyk opened his northeast Minneapolis shop on Sunday, March 12 , a council committee said. Committee members ordered city staff to negotiate a more severe punishment. View Quote |

A Minneapolis City Council committee on Tuesday approved a $50,000 fine and three-day liquor license suspension for Jim Surdyk ... his northeast Minneapolis liquor store must be closed on three Sundays — July 2, 9 and 16. View Quote Seems reasonable. |
