Saw on the news this morning that the St. Cloud  SWAT team got an MRAP from homeland security. It only cost them the price of shipping 3K.
Not sure I feel any safer.

Could be worse... they could all show up in a Fiat 500 or Cooper Mini. Which would all cost more than $20K a pop.

I'm more worried about who they choose to shoot first before asking questions or their love affair with the "no-knock".

I have no idea what they will do with one..
Not like it will stand out or anything, as it drives into the hood..
your not  getting out of it real fast - forget getting out while in a stack.
Even though the things can do 60-65 top end.. I do believe Uncle Sam has limited the top end to about half of that..

Its not going to give a team on foot much cover or concealment.. But It will look really tactical in a parade or on a calendar..

I didnt , I got it from invisible star power.
there are several lead swipes on the bearcat.
bearcat was used for cover to deploy less lethal to try and get the guy out of the tree.
it saved several officers and deputies lives, and was used to try to save the life of the crazy man who
thought the internet was going to kill him.

Wright County just got one.
Last weekend I was up by Zimmerman, in Sherburn County, and there was one driving around the Refuge. I was right behind in on CR 15.

St. Cloud Police Department Rolls Out New Crime Fighting Weapon

ST. CLOUD – The St. Cloud Police Department’s SWAT team unveiled their new armored vehicle this (Monday) morning.

The MRAP, which stands for Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected, comes from the Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department.

Lieutenant Jeff Oxton says the vehicle will help keep members of the SWAT team safe while responding to emergencies.

Oxton says there’s no comparison between this vehicle, and the old had ambulance they had been using.

The cost to the city of St. Cloud is about $10,000 to retrofit it for police use.  The vehicle is valued at over $400,000.

In it’s previous life it was used for training at Fort Ripley, Kansas.  It has less than 3,600 miles on it.

Besides the St. Cloud police department, the Sheriff’s Departments in Sherburne County, Wright County, Dakota County, Pine County, St. Louis County, and Olmstead County also received vehicles

I am still scratching my head to figure out what "crime" is being addressed by the local PD when they purchase a vehicle like this?

Honestly, $3K for a mobile bilboard is not that bad of a deal.

But, WTF???

Civilian police start showing up as military police, they will get less support from the population ...

I can definitely see that becoming an issue, especially in some of the more conservative county's up north.

The first time I saw a few deputies with camo utilities and bloused boots made me do a double take.  It was at a range however.  Overall though I doubt it will be a huge issue.

well, see, I expect liberals to go crazy overboard about silly things like cargo pockets, AR's and and armored truck.
and it always surprises me when I see it from a group of people who I would consider to be more rational then liberals.
its a truck that keeps people inside safe from gun fire.
no one answered my question on the last page. wouldn't you take an armored vehicle if you had the chance to get one for next to nothing?
there is in fact LOTS of privately owned armor in this country, from armored cars to T-72's. they sell em on E-bay for cryin out loud.
we have events in MN where we all show up in military gear from head to tow to pretend we are fighting zombies and living the
SHTF fantasy.
why is it our right to have these things, but when LE has it suddenly your living in a judge dredd movie?

BTW I have been told that I am quite friendly whilst on patrol

I guess its a god thing I don't blouse my boots.     I could see the worry about the militarization of police if the MRAP had an M2 or a 240 mounted on top. SWAT teams have been using armored vehicles since the 70s, so the concept is not new.

Having a SWAT team is not the problem...
Police owning and driving around in the vehicles is not a problem...
Never said the gubmint should not have sold them to locals...

What is the problem is when we have a rise in no knocks  and guns blazing every time someone leaves their garage door open.

Don't take this is a "cop bashing" thread. But as a bit of constructive criticism from the public. You show up all the time in full SWAT gear, folks don't look at you same way as in your "blues".

Maybe some of the dept are becoming more sensitive to their image, but, that is not what the public has been noticing.

SWAT teams really are not used that often. no knocks dont really happen that often either.
its just that every single mistake nation wide is made front page news by the media.
SWAT teams are not just rolled out for the fun of it. most departments have a worksheet with a couple
dozen criteria on it, and you need so many "points" to call out the SWAT team.

remember the media its really about giving you an accurate picture of the world.
they just want ratings like any other TV show.

are you unaware that verified LEO's on this site have an invisible star under their name?
<---its right there next to my lifetime NRA member icon

I remember reading about that some time ago. I guess I'd forgotten.
It doesn't really matter with you though, because on just about every post of yours, I can see the badge proudly displayed on your puffed up chest.

and?
was that supposed to be some kinda jab?
I like my job and dont hide it.

How dare you be a friendly patrol officer that likes his job and is ok with officers using available tools to stay safe.

I also like how so many on this site think no knocks are common place. They really aren't.

This thread is out of control, makes me wonder if this is GD...

I've never participated in a no knock, we can barely get a warrant as it is sometimes.

This thread went from bashing cops for using "safety equipment", to opposition and now we are on no knock warrants and swat teams busting down the wrong doors.  Fish bowl, what we do gets amplified across the country.  We are human, we make mistakes just like everyone else.

Its a piece of equipment, it enhances the capabilities we have for protecting ourselves as well as YOU.

SWAT teams have been using armored vehicles since the 70s, so the concept is not new.

You don't get to speak for 'the public' any more than I get to speak for all LEOs.  That bullshit you're spewing may well be your opinion, and it may even be the prevailing opinion in your personal little echo chamber, but don't presume to speak for 'the public'.

Its a growing concern, of that there is no doubt. Its not just a few fringe elements on the left and/or right that are concerned.
