I am happy for catching criminals who shouldnt have guns but wish the article would elaborate that is legal to shoot on your own property

Not in Jefferson County it is not legal, unless you use a suppressor. See Louisville Metro Ordinance # 14-1993.

You can see that ordinance in Chapter 99 at:

That deals with noise. The actual firing of a gun is not illegal. The only prosecutions of firearms being discharged is if it is in a public street, and under wanton endangerement

Yes, it is about noise. That's why I suggested a suppressor. Can you fire a gun without making noise? Many places can and do charge people for violations of this ordinance. If you make noise firing a gun, and complaints are received, you could be cited under this ordinance. It has happened many times in Jefferson Co. Our preemption statutes prohibits any local government regulation of "the manufacture, sale, purchase, taxation, transfer, ownership, possession, carrying, storage, or transportation of firearms...". It says nothing about the regulation of the discharge of firearms.
