Knob Creek is kind of it. Its not so wonderful as ranges go. Yes, you can blast away there. Look out for the fools and newbies. They stop every 30 minutes and you get a ten minute lecture. Also, nothing like a guy with a .50 caliber sitting in the middle of the line blasting away and knocking over everyone in both directions. Then the idiot newbies who put a target right next to yours and then start blasting away with their shotgun! Too bad they miss so much...or maybe they just can't tell your target from theirs.
When I lived in the Fairfield, Ohio I belonged to a private range. It was beautiful. We had a world class rifle range where national matches were held. (out over 300 yards until some lady donated land down range for a park! They had to make the rifle range "safe" after that.) We had competitive pistol ranges and a "plinking" range for just shooting up stuff. In addition we had a great skeet and trap range with weekly matches as well as an archery range. Oh, and we had a lovely new club house to relax in. All for $100 a year.(Same as Knob Creek) A private range with lots of space and activities. I miss it as there is NOTHING here that even holds a candle to it. Look at this and eat your heart out. It broke my heart to move to Louisville and have to give this up: A great range.. |

It sucks sometimes, but if we want to get new people into the sport you have to have open-to-the-public ranges like KCR. I was basically self taught, and KCR was the range that took me from "knows which end the bullets come out of" to being an RO/board member for the pistol club. For every idiot there are a hundred OK guys hanging out around there. If you see something, say something. Either to the shooter or to the RO. *Most* people want to be safe and do right. A simple "hey buddy, I think you might be hitting my target please be careful" is often all it takes. If they're new and teachable, then you've just learned them something. If they're assholes and need to be gone, then that'll become apparent and work out too. |

http://i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u503/Wildcat7834/fudd1.jpg The one part of the rifle range got "restricted" due to some wild arse fools blasting in the air and sending bullets places they didn't belong. This was after a county park was built down range. The picture you showed was just a couple of the lanes, only a few are built like that. They have open lanes for competition shoots and other times when there are RSO on-board.. Look at the rest of the photos, the plinking range and LOTS of nice pistol ranges. The indoor air rifle ranges are nice as are the class rooms and the skeet and trap ranges. Very pretty place. If one just wants to go blasting away with an AK Knob Creek works. I shoot often at Knob Creek, I am a member. If you find the more quiet times its not too bad. But seriously, after shooting at some nice private ranges the place just doesn't have the same feel. Lots of dust and dirt, and the range looks...well.....well used. Don't get me wrong, "The Creek" is usable, but compared to some of the nice private ranges, its just not the same. The issue at Knob Creek is there are times when there are just too many people who need supervision! The ones that worry me are the "blasters". They have seen too many movies. They step up to the line and see how fast they can pull the trigger. There is lead flying everywhere! Sometimes some of that lead makes it back to the firing line. I have seen more than a few slugs back on the line after bouncing off the rocks they used to prop up their cardboard targets. Knob Creek is certainly usable, but it gets very crowded and full of those inexperienced blaster people who think its quantity over quality. Of course, it does have the machine gun shoot and that gives it lots of bonus points. |
