So I applied for a job with a company HQ'd in CT.  I knew the cost of living would be higher and I figured the gun laws would suck.

But after all of the threads I just read through I'm thinking that maybe I don't want the job anyway.  And after looking up the tax rates...What the fuck!

IF I do move to CT can I at least bring my own ammo?

I'm no expert.  Some experts will chime in.  As far as I know you can bring in as much ammo as you want.  There is a restriction on AP .50 caliber (maybe some others).  CT ammo is no where near as bad as NJ, NY, MA.

Before the post Sandy Hook bullshit legislation I didn't think CT gun laws were terrible, and were much better than surrounding states.  Other than our 2013 "assault weapons" ban shit it is still better than NJ, NY, MA in my opinion.

That said, other than meeting my wife here and having to stay because of that, the biggest mistake of my life was returning here in 1984 after having left in 1973 with no plans to return.

If you can come here for a few years and make some money and leave go for it.  If not....  forget this commie shit hole!

You can bring in any semiautomatic (or single shot) firearm manufactured prior to 9/13/94. You can bring in any other firearm that is not classified as an assault weapon. You cannot bring in large capacity magazines (those that hold more than 10 rounds). Like the previous poster indicated there are restrictions on AP ammo. Otherwise ammo can be brought in. One cannot buy guns/ammo/magazines in CT without a state issue permit that costs upwards of $250 depending on which permit or certificate one obtains.

See the thread sticky for the ugly on our laws: F.A.Q. CT "is this legal" thread and helpful links

If taking a job here only you can decide if the salary is worth the offset in; higher taxes, rent, home prices, overall higher prices in most of the state. That includes higher priced gas than most of the rest of the nation.

CT is a nice place to live but is ruined by Democratic/Progressive anti business policies and taxes. Things are not going to change for the better any time soon due to the five major liberal run cities that typically control who gets elected for Governor and who this state swings for when voting for the President.

If you do plan on moving here in several months and have a pistol permit currently from your current state, apply for a non resident CT pistol permit now (takes about 8 to 10 weeks to get it) and then change the address within two business days once you move here. That will make thing much easier than applying within CT where certain towns take upwards of six months to issue pistol permits.

I disagree.  The fact that I can NOT go out and buy a brand new AR-15 of my choice due to the onerous and illogical laws passed that also made tens of thousands of us instant felons overnight makes CT #1 on the hit list for crappy firearm regs.  Also, I read in this morning's Courant that greater Hartford is #10 from the bottom when it comes to losing population in the USA!.  Fellow 'winners' are cities like Detriot, Chicago,    #10 having lost a net of just shy of 2000 citizen in one year (2015-2016) and we suspect it will get worse.  We also now have a max 10 round mag rule....another asinine reg that does nothing but put people in harm's way legally.

Run......don't walk but run away or don't say you weren't warned!!

If I wasn't already here. There is ZERO chance I would come here by choice knowing what I do now.
The only upside is the high volume of homes for sale due to people fleeing the state in record numbers. Too bad the houses are ridiculously over priced for what you actually get.

It's basically a failed state, taxes are about to go up as well. They had a 1.2 billion dollar budget deficit and the cannot fundamentally cut any spending.

The gun laws suck donkey dick. No new fun toys, no standard mags. Any fun stuff has to be a freaking antique.

No need to be sorry here.  Ever.  Sometimes people miss stuff.  It happens.

If you have an offer for a good job that will pay you well and you are aware of some of the issues that bother some here but can work with them, then give it a shot.  CT is a beautiful place.  I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.  Do we have problems?  You betcha.  Tons.  Name a place that doesn't.  Expensive?  You betcha again.  So are lots of other places that don't have some of the great things we have here.  The gun laws are what they are.  You can get a handgun carry permit. (PLEASE for the love of everything that is Holy, do NOT call it a CONCEALED carry permit.  There are those here that will act as if you shot their dog)

As to military type semi auto rifles, pre bans only.  People slap them together here all the time.  The magazine thing does suck.  No two ways about that.  It would be somewhat better if everyone carried a Colt 1911 as God intended but there are a lot of heathens here who worship at the Altar of the Austrian Satan.  They're always cranky anyway.

So I would prefer to welcome another shooter to the state than to have people vent their misery on you.  Fairfield County is really nice and is the only part of the state that is growing.  If things do not work out, despite what some here may say, you are free to cross our borders and move elsewhere without showing your "papers" as some who flunked basic history class will be sure to mention.  We're not Communist or Socialist here.  We're just a bit fucked up like the uncle that always gets invited to the family picnic out of obligation but no one wants to sit near.  We're Connecticut.

Beautiful is not a word I would use to describe this place.  We have about a total of a month of nice weather.  7 or 8 months is cold, the rest is somewhat okay.  I've lived in much better states and countries.

People often don't respond to the stickied thread because people rarely post in it anymore.  Prior to your post yesterday the last post in the sticky was almost a month old. The first post in this thread answers most questions in your initial post to this thread. If your VZ58 is preban (manufactured prior to 9/13/94) then it can have all the evil features you want on it. If the VZ58 was manufactured after 9/13/93 and the magazine is pinned within the semiautomatic rifle and the magazine is capable of holding 10 or fewer rounds of ammunition then its legal so long as the rifle's overall length is 30 or more inches. Said rifle could also have all the evil features including pistol grip due to having a fixed magazine. The evil feature list (for the most part) applies to detachable magazine rifles and semiautomatic pistols.

Any semiautomatic detachable magazine centerfire rifle that doesn't have a; collapsible/folding stock, forward pistol grip, flash suppressor, thumbhole stock, or pistol grip that is directly below the action of the weapon is legal. A pistol grip is legal IF it is behind the action of the weapon rather than directly below it. The magazine issue is separate and mostly unrelated to the AWB. Generally any magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds is banned, only exceptions are tubular magazines in lever actions and in .22 caliber firearms.

Not sure what you have to be sorry for. Or are you saying your sorry for the (unconstitutional) laws those who choose to follow the law suffer under here in CT?

I noticed this.  If it did happen I'm not even really sure how to negotiate the salary in good faith.  Cost of living calculator adds about 25% to where I live.  Taxes look to be over double (excluding Federal)

If I made $100,000 here (for a round number) should I be looking at about 150K? or add about 1/2 to my last salary?

Like what has been already said, all places have there issues.  But, having lived in CT since 1960 or so, I have witnessed it's decline.  I don't even know if you can identify all the businesses that have left, or closed down.  CT used to be a pretty nice place to live, with a booming economy, unlimited jobs, low taxes, and middle of the road politics.  However, it is now run by socialist, PC, Liberals, who never met a entitlement program they didn't like (as long as someone else was paying for it).  CT is now overtaxed, over regulated, over priced, over populated, and economically crippled.  All of our major cities are pretty much run down urban areas (with a few blocks kept nice for the rich folks).

Our weather here is generally pretty stable.  That means we don't have extremes of hot or cold, and seldom have dangerous natural events (earthquakes, droughts, wildfires, tornados, and the like).  There is a lot of water here, and that makes the less built up areas nice and green.  But, that is due to the fact that we have long seasons of just cold and damp weather.  Basically we have about three months of nice weather, six months of Spring/Fall (cold, windy, damp, rainy), and three months of winter that can be anything from cold and snowy, to mild and rainy.

While it would be nice to have another pro-gun person move in, it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference.  Non-liberals are fleeing when they can, and CT just keeps turning a deeper shade of Blue.  The state has fallen way too far to ever come back.

Due to my 32 years of military service, I have seen a lot of other states, and countries.  There are certainly a whole bunch of places worse to live, but just as many that are as nice or better as well.  I, for one, can't wait to retire, and move someplace a lot warmer, and a lot Redder.

If you decide to take the job and move here, Welcome.  Misery love company.

For example, if you want a high end finance job (hedge fund, etc.), you kind of have to be in the tri-state area.  Otherwise, CT ain't THAT beautiful.

Glocks are the official pistol of the CTHTF. If you don't figure out a way to legally bring one with you, you're really going to be a loner.

Really?  Since when?  Multiple people making poor choices does not make anything official.

Isn't admitting you don't have a Glock a banable offence here in the CTHTF? Or at the very least a time out while one contemplates the error of their ways?

Does an M&P count?

If you have a nice job in AZ stay there.  The taxes, high cost, etc, don't make being here worth it unless you have absolutely no other option.

Plus many companies are leaving this state anyways.  Moving here to get laid off would blow.

I would say if the job pays well and you can net yourself more money after paying the extra taxes and costs to live here then go for it. I assume this will boost your resume. If so it may be a good career move.

Be aware that not only is there cost of living differences to deal with but you need to consider commuting time and aggravation. Fairfield county has some heavy traffic during rush hours. Most of those people are trying to get to Manhattan. If your potential job is not in Manhattan try to find a home that would give you the "opposite commute". Also make sure you know the cost of commuting if you plan to use the trains and or parking lots. Go to Google maps and look at typical traffic for the times you will be on the road. A 1.5-2 hr commute is not unusual if going into Manhattan.

Connecticut by itself is a decent state. It has been ruined and run into the ground by liberals. If you like 4 seasons then this place is not bad. Winter can be a little long. Crappy weather usually starts around Thanksgiving and goes until April 15th or so. If you like winter sports you will be within driving distance of snowmobile trails and ski resorts.

The gun laws here make absolutely no sense. The laws were changed in response to Sandy Hook and are not about preventing mentally ill or criminals from possessing or purchasing firearms but are a exploitive reaction to a tragedy. The left wingers used the tragedy to incrementally restrict our rights. Suppressors, full auto, any handgun and anything manufactured prior to the Clinton AW ban is goo to go. Standard capacity magazines are no longer allowed unless you "declared" them to the State. Of course non of these laws apply if you are .mil or LEO.

One last thing that was not mentioned, if you do decide to move here apply for your pistol permit as a non-resident. The process is MUCH less involved and about 1/2 the cost. Once you become a resident it is as simple as changing your address and it becomes a resident permit. Many Fairfield county towns add substantial hoops to jump through and make the process very difficult.

All this being said if I get a chance to transfer somewhere else I'm gone. I can't take the direction this state is going. I lived here in the early 70s as a kid and returned after schooling in 1984. I have watched this state take an increasingly faster spiral toward a liberal hell hole every year and can't stomach it anymore.

Not a valid excuse.  For this affront to sbhaven, you must cut off your left pinky, wrap it in white linen and present it to him.  It is the only way to restore honor to his great house.  You shall then be called Edgephoto Ninefinger for the rest of your days.  Kinda sounds like a LOTR character but you'll get used to it.

Wow. There is just no pleasing you.  But I'm going to keep trying.  Something in addition to having all lawyers executed must make you happy.  I'm not a quitter so I'm making you my special project.

He likes sweat pants and hates road salt. You guys can agree on two things Malloy sucks and Obama sucks too!

BTW I will cut off pinky when I find out what LOTR means.

group8 is wrong about pizza. Go to Chicago and try to eat that garbage or go to TX and they will ask you what kind of BBQ sauce you want on your pizza.

Ok I read thru this quickly. Yes, glock #1. The road salt in CT is really bad and no one will ever disagree with that. I have eaten pizza all over the US except the west coast and ours is easily the best. CT has great weather if you love having 4 seasons. The CT outdoors are very nice as well. All that said, I would not move here mindless the pay was substantially higher or if your current job was being eliminated. The liberals have long since destroyed this state.
And just incase I wasn't clear, Glock #1!!
