There's always been a mysterious hole in my backyard. Just big enough for my foot to fall into from time to time
I stuck my phone in it to see what there was and it had brick walls inside the hole, so I dug it up today and found this... 
It's a 4 foot by 4 foot slab of stone, about 3 inches thick, with a brick/mortar foundation underneath it. Also, you can see in the second picture that there are 4 holes around the opening where there were extremely old bolts. Any clue what the hell this is/was? |

How old is your house? Try town hall there might be some records from the old days. |

House was built in 1939. Our neighbor grew up in the house, her grandparents built it I believe. She has no clue either

I agree 100% with zegermanznew. Most people who own older homes assume that water was always available from the town but that's not the case. A lot older homes had wells like that. Bet that's the case for your home. Resurrect it and you can have a source to water your lawn.........for free!

I'm thinking it's probably an old well. I can't dig in it because it's just wide enough for my foot, I can't get a shovel inside. I'm gonna try power washing straight down to see if it makes anything interesting visible
