I'm not sure if I posted this before or not. It's an 1865 Spencer carbine that was in my Uncles attic when he died. The Springfield Research Service documented the gun 20 years ago, and it came back to a PA cavalry unit; It saw service at Shiloh and Vicksburg, among other places..

That has got to be one of the coolest posts here .  I was a civil war freak when I was a kid, always loved the spencer because it was the gun that never made it in the war, but helped the evolution of the gun

I've got a customer who has a Spencer hanging over his fireplace mantel here in town.  I've tried to have him document it at the museum but he's really just interested in keeping if for looks on his wall.  Killing me.

This looks like a very similar gun, PA Cavalry documentation and all. The guy wants $4,500 Buy Now. Not sure what it is actually worth, but thought I would share.

You should send it out and get it restored. A nice Cerakote job.

I wonder if the 13rd magazine qualifies under the "contained in a  lever action" exemption.

This brings up a great question. How does the state view pre-1898 firearms with magazines?

The way that I was reading it, the pre-1898 magazine manufacture date is irrelevant.

Unlike just about every other (tube fed) lever action, the Spencer's magazine is detachable, by design- hence the predicament.

See PA13-3 sec. 23 (1)
(1) "Large capacity magazine" means any firearm magazine, belt, drum, feed strip or similar device that has the capacity of, or can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition, but does not include: (A) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than ten rounds of ammunition, (B) a . 22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device, (C) a tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm, or (D) a magazine that is permanently inoperable;
