October Surprise
http://www.ctnow.com/news/connecticut/new-haven/hc-yale-new-haven-hospital-1017-20141016,0,2903998.story KELLY GLISTA 9:04 a.m. EDT, October 16, 2014 NEW HAVEN — Officials say that Yale-New Haven Hospital is waiting for test results on a patient who recently traveled to Liberia and was admitted Wednesday night with a fever. A HazMat team responded to the hospital late Wednesday night and the patient was placed in isolation, which is part of the hospital's standard protocol. "We don't know what we have," a hospital spokesman said. Recent cases of Ebola in the United States have increased concern over the potential spread of the disease. Samples have been sent to the Center for Disease Control, but officials are encouraged by the fact that the patient's fever subsided after being admitted. View Quote |

Just saw that and I have been follow the thread in GD about Dallas...any one have inside info? Judging by the wording it sounds like this could become a positive case, it's probably one of the students that took the trip to track the virus.
From WFSB: Yale-New Haven Hospital treating quarantined patient Posted: Oct 16, 2014 8:57 AM EDT Updated: Oct 16, 2014 9:12 AM EDT By Rob [email protected] Follow @rpolanskyWFSB Yale-New Haven Hospital. (WFSB file photo)NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - Hospital officials in New Haven have quarantined a patient as a precaution. MOREAdditional LinksSources tell Eyewitness News that the patient was admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital. Officials are not releasing any information at this point and have not confirmed that the symptoms mirrored that of the Ebola virus. They said they'll know more later in the day. There's no word on the patient's condition or identity. Mayor Toni Harp planned to meet with city officials Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the city's Emergency Operations Center. If confirmed, the case would mark the third in the country. Two nurses in Dallas, TX contracted the virus after treating a man who had died from it. Eyewitness News has a crew heading to the hospital to find out more information. Refresh this page and watch Eyewitness News for updates. Copyright 2014 WFSB (Meredith Corporation). Fox just reported on this.
It was the Yale professors (or students?) you probably heard about earlier in the week/ last week. They were in Liberia working with their health administration or something. They were going to stay in a sort of self committed quarantine for three weeks upon their arrival home, but felt it was unnecessary after a couple days. Im gonna go with the flu or something. But Im just crossing my fingers here. ETA: Why does it seem that every one is being completely retarded about all of this. Like no one is smart enough to make a good decision. Nurses breaking protocols? CDC clearing said nurses for flights? Us letting people back in the country (Duncan) after having them answer a good faith survey?! Now Yale fucking professors saying their own damn good idea was not necessary? What the fuck?1?!? |

A little more info on the possible New Haven case from WTNH. Apparently one of the two they chose NOT to quarantine on Monday.
Patient at Yale New Haven Hospital has Ebola-like symptoms NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– A patient is being evaluated at Yale New Haven Hospital at this hour with Ebola-like symptoms, according to a statement from the hospital. News 8 Medical Reporter Jocelyn Maminta has talked to a credible source with the hospital who says the patient is one of the Yale Researchers who just returned from a trip to Liberia on Monday. This is one of the same researchers officials decided not to have quarantined after their trip to Africa. News 8 has a crew at Yale New Haven Hospital and will post information as soon as it becomes available. From Monday: Yale Students Won’t be Quarantined NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – The two Yale doctoral students who have just returned from West Africa, will not have to be quarantined. The students traveled to Liberia to help set up a computer system so officials can track the spread of Ebola. Yale says the two never came in direct contact with Ebola patients and were never in a clinical setting. Originally, the two were going to voluntarily quarantine themselves for 21 days. Instead the doctoral students will follow CDC guidelines and be monitored for signs of the deadly disease for three weeks. |

It will be interesting to see how Malloy handles this . . He already declared a state of emergency for CT based on the ebola fears, and that was almost a week ago..
Can we blame him for not quarantining people returning from Africa? Quarantine is one of the reasons to enact the state of emergency in the first place. |

How will Malloy and Harp deal with the optics of this. How will our fellow residents deal with it. So far the optics are a fucking mess on the national stage. Too much conflicting information. The borders wide open, no flights being stopped, few being quarantined, nurse who treated guy who died from Ebola gets on domestic flight after contacting CDC and being told it was OK then checks her self into hospital day after returning on domestic flight. I wonder if this will be the final impetus to get people to realize that we do need to do something about closing the borders. Hell the suspicion is that the virus affecting children around the country was brought across the border by illegals. If this possible case turns out to be real and others start coming down as infected in CT will Malloy suspend the election in November and if he does how will citizens react? |

Still hoping its the flu. |

Just heard something really interesting.
On Jim Vicevich’s show the owner of a company called to relate an interesting experience. They employ 100 people. One of the employees travels to 3rd world countries on mission trips helping build churches, water supplies, etc., etc., during his vacation. This year he is supposed to go to Eastern Africa on his mission trip. A number of employees have voiced a concern about this employee returning infected and within the 21 day incubation period. So, the employer called UCONN and asked for guidance. UCONN suggested that if this employee goes there that he not be allowed back into the company for the full 21 days after he returns. So, the company offered the employee two choices: 1)Don’t go. The employer will refund him 100% of the money he’s paid for deposits and also donate $1000 to the charity he was going to work for. 2)If he decided to go, he would not be allowed to return to work for 21 days but the company would pay him for one week away and he could use any remaining vacation time for the 2 week balance. The employee decided to go. This is the type of stuff that’s going to crop up time and time again as we get deeper into this situation. Frankly, I’m shocked that they employee is still going regardless of how dedicated he is. I sure would tell my wife she wasn’t going to go under these circumstances. I also want to tell you that a relative from California was going to fly to CT for Thanksgiving. They emailed yesterday and said they would not be coming this year until all of this is finished. So, it begins. Multiply this by thousands and you can see how the fear of this disease is going to sculpt the economy for the near future no doubt affecting the markets, too. Rome |

The point is this person was at ebola central as a researcher. They also hung around with a lot of students while there and after they returned. Wonder how big the isolation group will be this time.

Ebola is killed with hospital-grade disinfectants (such as household bleach). Ebola on dried on surfaces such as doorknobs and countertops can survive for several hours; however, virus in body fluids (such as blood) can survive up to several days at room temperature. |

My daughter works as an executive for one of the Southern CT hospitals and said they were in a "work coma" yesterday discussing this whole issue. She wasn't even aware of the 2nd case in Dallas until I told her. I did shoot her an email with info about the Yale situation. Thankfully she doesn't interact with the medical side of the hospital but she does work with some of the physicians. We've had a serious chat. She also said that if she were to hear anything critical she would keep me posted.
