I like the bearing roller idea, Im curious to see how long they hold up as far as rust goes. (Im sitting with friends waiting for this poker game to get started. I didnt read your whole post, but I will later) |

Ariens has this feature called the auto turn. The bigger machine has it.
As you plow the driveway and if you want to change direction, you simply lean on 1 handle bar (as your turning the machine). 1 tire unlocks so it turns very easily. Problem with it, if the skid drags on the ground or catches a line of the driveway, the machine "thinks" you want to turn. These leads to you fighting the machine up and down the walks. You end up making snake tracks up & down vers holding a nice straight line. After studying the condition, I mounted these bearings up front to act like little wheels. It works perfectly! It holds a straight line now, and the kicker is they don't wear out. I've been running these all winter with no ill effects. Previously I had to change the skids every 2 months as they would wear thru. No more. 
Because of the no wear effects of the roller bearings up front, I made a set for the little machine as well. Of course if you have a dirt driveway or gravel they won't work very well. But it suits a tar driveway very nicely. |

I broke my snow mtd blower auger gear box got a new
part and replaced it. Definetly messed something up installed it backwards. Anyone willing to help for some ammo? North Central CT! |

Backwards? that's weird.
There should be a parts break down (schematic) that will help you get it together properly. Partstree.com should have the exploded view so you will know exactly how it re-assembles. They are on my parts go to list. http://www.partstree.com/parts/ |

I absolutely love ariens machines. That is going to be my next snowblower purchase, my generator is made by ariens and the thing start 1st pull everytime and never fails me. If you guys are in the Bolton area WH Press and sons is a mom and pop shop and authorized ariens dealer, they're machines are completely different from the ones sold at home depot. They are alittle more pricey but different quality then the big box store. And when you go to pick it up it is full assembled and has a full tank of gas! They even do free local delivery with purchases. They're great guys down there.

So he went to the Ariens dealer and they said, it's a Home Depot machine, only they can get the parts you need. So My Uncle returned the machine and got his money back. What good is a snow blower in snow season if it don't run? |

I have an MTD with track drive (not wheels and tires) that I purchased in 1996 or 97 after the winter from hell that snowed every fucking week.
When I bought it the track drive was somewhat of a cool factor, but I since learned it is very useful. It can climb piles of packed snow. It can climb stairs to clear off my deck. I used to be a Porsche/Ferrari/MB mechanic, so can fix lots of stuff. I maintain or modify everything I own. For example: the auger gear box was a sealed unit, so I put a grease fitting on it to be able to lubricate it. Parts are still available for it, so hopefully I can keep it going for as long as I live in this snowy, commie, shit hole. |

It runs but is grumpy. I'll probably buy another old WH tho. New riders seem to be crap until you get into commercial equipment. |

That Scag is fucking sweet!! Those things are fun to run and make quick work of a boring ass chore.
Snow rocks. I'd rather blow driveways than mow lawns. My work is the sun, I work in it all day. For the second time in my life, I was mistaken for a Mexican last week. I can feel the skin cancer setting in all day as the sun reigns down on me. Fuck summer. Winter wont get here fast enough. Driving is more fun when its dicey out, too. Snow has a way of weeding out the stupid. .

After the winter from hell a few years ago my old John Deere machine was in need of work or replacement. I was working on it in the garage trying to patch her together as each storm hit.
I decided I was going to replace the John Deere with a new machine. I looked at the Husky, Ariens and Honda The Honda blowers are made for midgets so they were ruled out quickly. I then decided either the Husky or the Ariens. I wanted a local dealer with good reputation to buy from. This way if there was an issue and I needed it fixed under warranty it would not take months. Out of warranty I fix myself. Once I thought about it I ended up just rebuilding the Deere machine. $600 in parts and a couple days worth of work I had it ready for another winter of use. It has been good ever since. If I see a good deal on a used Ariens I might grab it . The Deere will serve me well for more seasons I am sure but it the engine or gearbox breaks I will not fix it. |

I bought an Areins at the end of this last season, I retired a 16 yr Crapsman blower that I had zero issue with the first 13yrs of ownership. The last 3 yrs I have put 100-200 a yr into it . This last season we had a week or two that we got hit every 2-3 days ,well the axle broke so I gave up on it.
I saved the motor to see about finding a go karting Craig's list to put it on.

I then bought a used Ariens 28" machine Monday to back up my primary 30" machine. This machine was $800 with not much use, but it needed carburetor work as the machine was not running smoothly. Old gas in the carb screwed it up. I serviced it with fresh oil & grease, I added my rolling type skids, a new light, spark plug, fresh gas, then I cleaned the carb. No luck as it still surges, so I ordered a new carb for $49 bucks. She's running perfect now. I sold the old Snapper machine because the machine was slow and short. It was terrible at doing sidewalks as the snow would just blow into the wall of snow lining the sidewalk, then the snow would bounce off the wall of snow and get me all covered. Plus it would take me nearly 2 hours a storm, even if only a few inches... Oh, I did add a snow cab on the bigger machine. I don't know if I like it or not yet, if it sucks, it comes off with two knobs. Maybe keeping me warmer and drier as I walk around would be a good thing?
