That's a good time actually, you are after the tourist season for the most part but before the snow. I'd look into one of the beach houses/cottages that get rented out cheap in the winter. Try Hampton or North Hampton, they are a few miles south of Portsmouth.

Can't really think of places to stay besides hotels. But I am very familiar with both the Reading and Bedford area's. PM me if you are interested in local things to do. Fall is a very nice time in new england, you should have a great time.

We hope to have a good time. My wife is having a medical procedure done and we are treating this like a vacation.

I grew up in Bedford. I don't think there is anything actually in town that fits what you are looking for, but there might be something like it near the airport in Manchester (10min from Bedford, 45min from Portsmouth) If you're looking for a real nice dinner spot one night, check out the BVI (Bedford Village Inn) on 101 near the center of town.
