Damn, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I had an old Winchester Bolt Action I knew had some collector value. Howell only offered me $200 towards a trade-in after telling me how it wasn't worth crap. I brought it down to Kittery and they gave me $400 cash. The Portland crowd who don't know any better, keeps him in business. He had to swing towards more high-end models/brands since Wal-mart open in Windham.

They do have good prices on Bushmasters. They must get a bulk rate discount since I bought one for dealer's cost (advertised). They tried to sell me some overpriced USGI mags they got from someone in the Coast Guard (pre-ban). I have more than he does.

Last in a series of degrading quality.

BTW, Four Seasons is moving across the hall within the month. Carl gave me a tour, and I estimate about 1.5x the space currently available (they are taking over the space formerly occupied by USA Demolition).

Got another one.

Sporting and hunting Depot

Located in Charlestown, NH.

A small place but he's got all kinds of interesting stuff in there. Doesn't have much of a firearms inventory yet but is growing. Always has plenty of shotguns, muzzleloaders, and hunting rifles.. He's starting to expand with handguns too. Has some military style rifles usually as well.. I bought my G3 clone from him. Has a lot of ammo.. Tries to always keep some military ball ammo in stock from old 8mm to XM193.. Lots of hunting stuff...

I give 'em two big thumbs up. They are ALWAYS eager to help you get what you need if they don't have it.

From what is it...route 5? That goes under I-91 in Springfield, Vermont..(Lived here for 20 years, and can't remember the actual name of that section of road...LOL).. Cross the old toll bridge into Charlestown, NH and take your first left.. It's out that road on the left, can't be more than a mile or two.. You'll see the building its right in plain site.. Has a 'lil fence around the parking lot.

How true you are! Also seems as though unless you're a regular there, you're a nobody. Oh, they also change prices on you. Was told by an employee that they charge $25 for a transfer. Had a print-out froma website showing transfer fees they charge too. Had them do one for me and - bang - they charge me $25 more...$50 for a transfer and I had to show them how they screwed up the log book! Never Again! I live 10 minutes away but still will drive out of my way to save $5 from thier crap. Heck, he ain't got the selection but is a friendly and personable guy over at Gulf of Maine shop in Raymond.

NH Ordnance, Bridgewater Hill Road, Plymouth NH
(603) 968-3205 Tuesday-Saturday 10-5

Mostly sells military rifles and pistols, not much hunting stuff. Some of the best prices I've found in NH.
A little off the main road so it might be best to call for directions.

I guess we are kind of stuck

Howell's has decent selection with high prices

Gulf of Maine has high prices and not much selection

Bennets is a great place to go but is only open wed.-sat.

Kittery is far away

We need to get together and open the mother of all Maine gun shops.

GOSH! I got to back you all up here on this one too!!!! I just moved to Gray, so unfortunately Howells is quite convenient for me. The other week, i see two frickin new sleds out on the front lawn!!! those are what, 10k a pop?! You cant charge rediculous prices, then flaunt your money like that! Man, im glad others feel this way. With that said, he did give me a good deal on a stripped Bushy lower last week!

But Mainers, do not despair!!! One shop i HIGHLY recommend, is Tri-State Police and Fire Equipment. Owned by Dave Fleury, of the old "Fleury's Sporting goods". They are great Guys. The shop is in Winthrop, and at the time i was living in Cape Elizabeth, well over an hour drive. I would make that trip at least every other week. What they do: Lots of police department trade ins. You have a buddy who wants into a good handgun cheap, thats your place to go. They will also order anything new, and a lot cheaper than i have found at any other store in Maine. They dont necesarily always have the largest selection on hand, and every once in a while i will see something where the price is a little iffy, but more often than not, they have the best prices. Last i remember, always a few AR's in stock, handful of Benelli's, Glocks, S&W, and like i said tons of Dept trade ins.

Just tell them Patrick Sullivan sent you... then they will just laugh

Couple more Southern Maine items.

First, I'll have to back everyone up...stay away from Howell's. Crazy prices, poor service. And I cut them slack for awhile as I took my CCW training class there. They were okay for that, but the prices and service suck. There's a guy doing reloading and other stuff out back now, and he seemed okay, but you better know someone or flash some bills around at themain counter.

For transfers, I've used a guy just outside of Gorham. $20, he gives you a copy of his ffl and you handle the rest. Name escapes me at the moment. Has a home shop. He's recently started charging sales tax though, so I'm shopping...

...and found Art at Eagle Guns in Limerick. Same fee, no tax (since I'm paying direct!). Haven't actually met him...e-mail only so far. Seems okay. Anyone know him?

The guy in Raymond is fun to talk to. WAY on the right (like most ppl here on the board! :) ) Inventory is terrible though. I know individuals who have as many guns as his shop.

There's a cool shop up around Berlin, NH. Inventory nearly rivals KTP. Can't recall the name. But they are over the border, so you have to do transfers.

Has anyone ever worked with Northern Maine Tactical Supply? Class III place. I've e-mailed them for info on transfering a supressor, but they've never replied.

Nice thread. let's all try to keep it updated.

Tim

Wow, didn't realize there was so many Arfcommers in my backyard!!!

I'm in Gray too, about 5 minutes from Howell's. Howell does have good deals on Bushmasters though, I'll give him that. I'm also a 'regular' there if you can call it that, so I don't get hammered on so much, in fact I've gotten a few sweet deals there, but I had to earn it.

I've never been to Gulf of Maine....I'll have to check that out. Cool stuff, I haven't checked this thread in awhile!

Funny too, how we all agree on Howell's!!!

Collector's Firearms and Militaria aka Affordable Firearms, on Route 38 in Pelham in the double deck strip mall. Good prices, lots of military and other unusual stuff, fair on trade-ins, pleasant to do business with. They're at most of the shows, too.

Dave's Sporting Goods, Route 125, Plaistow NH, on the left heading south near the Yamaha dealer (and the adult bookstore for most of those who frequent this site ). A class 3 dealer with a good selection of assault style "sporting goods" and handguns. Good selection of ammo.

Stateline Firearms, Route 125 Plaistow NH, About 1 mile north of Dave's on the other side of the road in the same plaza as the Early Bird Cafe (Plaistow Commons?). Stocks real guns, airsoft guns, etc. At most of the shows, too.

Lewis Arms, Route 3A, Bow NH. A little pricey on some items but not all. Very nice shop. Specializes in fine shotguns and hunting rifles. Great handgun selection, too- Stocks CZs as well other handguns not normally seen. Does have some ARs and a few M1As. Used to be the gunsmith at Riley's and is regarded as one of the best in the area.
lewisarms.homestead.com

Costa Arms, Church St., Kingston NH. Heading south on 125, take a right just before the Banknorth/Dunkin Donuts plaza, then immedeately take a left. Look for the log cabin.
Good handgun prices, decent guy to do business with. Visit here, Stateline, and Dave's all in the same trip.

I've also heard good things about Big Al's gun and reel in Derry, but haven't been in there myself. A small shop off of the owner's house.

I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the Kittery Trading Post has an office in NH which allows NH residents to buy handguns from them, and buy all guns without the Maine sales tax.

Sportsman's Trading Company, Route 101A, Amherst, NH (Just outside Nashua). If you like having a pushy used car salesman selling you guns, this is your shop! Nothing really bad about the place, other than that.

Seacoast Firearms in Hampton recently called it quits in case anyone was wondering. Too bad .

Wanted to make sure someone mentioned Bullseye Shooting Supplies of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Been doing buisness there for more than 20 years. Owner is outstanding, takes the time to discuss anything you need to know. Reloads any caliber, usually has reloads for all calibers in stock. Doing buisness there is always a pleasure, obviously can't say enough.

For any Mainers in a more mid-coast area, I highly recommend Maine Military Supply in Brewer, just under Bangor. They also have a store in Newport, but I've not been to that one, though I hear its smaller.

www.mainemilitary.com

They have a wide selection of military surplus items and manuals, some paintball and airsoft, hunting clothing and trapping equipment, knives, etc. The staff is great, especially the owner. They'll do FFL transfers for $20 and have a fairly large selection of ammunition and rifles with an emphasis on military style weapons, and some pistols. I remember walking in there the day the AWB sunset and one of the staff had a Bushmaster in a rest, working on it, and I asked if he was putting a collapsible stock on it "F'in right I am!" he replied, a bit more colorfully. I guess they'd been up since the official end at midnight that night, working on ARs

Van Raymond Outfitters in Bangor is my choice for reloading supplies like powder and primers, any special ammunition, and some general gear. They have a good selection of rifles and shotguns and some pistols, Uncle Mike's holster gear, and are good about ordering stuff. The downstairs is also a full fishing shop with all sorts of tackle and what not, but I'm not much for fishing.

I avoid Willy's in Ellsworth. Overpriced and mostly a clothing store, I've found their staff to be rude and unhelpful and their gunsmith did quite a slop job on one of my friend's guns.

Well I had to give it one more try. Went to Howell's today to see about trading the Mrs. S&W 640 Centennial, Taurus matching holster, belt and ammo case, and a Kramer clip on IWB, and 2 speedloaders. All items in excellent shape. They wanted to give me $300.00 in trade for a Glock 26, and I had to hold out for that. It was like they were doing us a favor. Needless to say, the Mrs. is not the proud owner of a new Glock 26 yet. She was less than impressed that you practically have to beg someone to help you out.

Ok I went to Kittery Trading Post today, they had a mint used 98% Glock 26 for $395.00. Traded the Centennial and accessories for $374.00. They gave me $74.00 more than Howells and $124.00 more than another place. So I've already installed Trijicons, test fired it, detail stripped it and cleaned it. The wife is pleased. It's good to keep the wife happy, she can shoot. The wife says that the dogs at Howells are the most attentive things there.

I'm in central Maine, frequent Wildwood Guns in China, not much new in stock but extensive high end selection, matched side by sides and suck. Plus decent to talk with and will get you whatever. The 2+ hr drive to Kittery is worth it. Pricing and selection. But damn does my ass hurt when I get home.

Powderhorn on Cape Cod is a terrible shop, when you enter the shop someone is always following you around when you go near the firearms. There have been are a few old posts on this site talking about how nasty and rude the people are that work there. Not to mention that they were selling a USED berretta for 150bucks more than I could buy new at another shop. I still cant understand how this guy stays in buisness!

I wont go anywhere other than the Newington Gun Exchange. I feel the professionalism, the amount of guns they havehock.gif on display, and their very fair and consistent prices always bring me back.

I should go and check out Hoffman's sometime though and I would like to plug Center Sports in Colombia. Their building has a very nice atmosphere with anything you need that is outdoor.

I'll toot Lars's horn, so he doesn't have to.

I had two AR's that needed some work done. One was a problem shooter. I had Lars build-up new flat-top uppers for both of them, M4 profile barrels, BUIS sighted in, one upper with YHM carbine railed handguards, Magpul trigger guards on the lowers, Badger Tac Latch, and anything else I could think of at the time. The uppers are flawless, and both guns now run perfectly. Price was very reasonable, and turn-around time was less than two weeks, even with me adding things to the order mid-build. He even snapped pictures to show me the progress, and keep me filled in.

But here's the best part. Customer service was simply outstanding. Lars responded to all my e-mail almost instantly, answering questions and recommending options. He went out of his way to meet me to pick-up and drop off the guns, without me having to drive all the way to his shop. We ran into a problem on one of my Bushy lowers that was going to keep me from getting the gun back right away. Lars went the extra mile to make sure we solved the problem to my satisfaction. He worked hard to make sure I was a satisfied customer, and I am.

If you need a source in New England for AR-15 gunsmithing service or parts, Lars is top notch.

Scott

It's a family run shop (Stan and his wife, whose name I can't remember),they allways have a large inventory, both new and used.
They don't carry many sporing items, just firearms and reloading stuff.
Stan allways seems to have a few interesting guns along with what seems like hundreds of hunting rifles an shotguns. He does lots of buisness, so his inventory changes like crazy.

Their last name is Holz. This is THE place to go. Their prices are the lowest(20rnd boxes of Speer .50AE are $15.99, just for one example) that I have ever seen, and I cross over to Whitefield, NH every time that I need ammo or guns. They don't throw sales pitches either- if they don't have something that fits your needs they will order it or suggest you visit one of their competitors.

Powder Horn in Williston VT= overpriced and run by an A-hole who will try to sell you something that you don't want(my new Glock 21 cost less at 'The Village Gun Store' than the used Glock 19 the Powder Horn guy tried to talk me into instead of the G21 I was looking for(hi-cap mags weren't involved btw)). Also the Powder Horn sells some used items as new(other local gun shops don't do this shit).

FWIW, Jurek Brothers Inc. In Greenfield Mass will be closing it's Retail doors and moving to a new building next door. Sadly, it will be LEO only sales and mail order/internet sales - coming up very soon. It's a sad day indeed in Mass to me especially since I have spent THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars there and I'll miss their store horribly.

I moved to Maine from MA, and must say Kittery Trading Post is quite an experience. Having guns behind a counter and having to ask to look at each gun gets quite tiring, at KTP most of the long guns are unsupervised in the middle of the sales floor and you can pick up and handle hundreds in a few hours! Wow. Great prices, and they have never refused to buy a gun from me becuase they had too many of them or whatever.
In MA, I lived in Western, Central and Eastern MA. In the Western part of the state, the only real gun store is Dave's Sporting Goods of Pittsfield. Great store with friendly owner and employees, been shopping there since 1985. Not as many guns now as they're used to be because of MA insane laws.
In the Springfield/chicopee area Jimmy Squids Weapons and Personal Defense Specialists are the best. Google "Joe Cartabona" sometime to see his many articles and awards. He owns PDS and retired from Colt Firearms Handgun develope department. Specializes in self defense handguns, training, non-leathal. High quality guns hard to find in MA.
Jimmy Squid has more traditional sporting guns.
On the east coast, 4 seasons has a good reputation from everyone I talked to but haven't been there.
Gun Sport North of Lawrence is a small shop, very friendly owner nice pistols and sporting guns.
Daves Sporting Goods of Plaistow NH is excellent for the police/military type weapons. Has DSW, Colt, AR's, Thompsons, combat shotguns, AK's, M1A's, the list goes on. Also Class 3

On the negative, run don't walk from the awful and abysmal Hansen and Hansen of Southport CT.
D'Andreas of Stratford CT has good guns but they act like they're doing you a favor showing you a gun. Apathetic.

Kudos to Hoffman's of Newington, CT aka "Guns for the Good Guys". they are excellent , friendly and the prices can't be beat. What a great place.

cheers,
Ed

Another thumbs down on The Powder Horn.

I wandered in there once or twice a year when bored at Cape Cod. Yesterday, I did so again. When I inquired about whether I could return a 2nd-hand beat-up pistol grip ($20.00 for 2 after some discussion) if it did not fit, the owner responded (exact quote):

'If I was going to let you return it, I would have charged you $40.00'

I think that says it all. I won't wander there again.

Dang, nhgunnut, took the words right out of my mouth. Dick is a great guy, easy to talk to. I am going to be going in there probably tomorrow to look for a Ruger p95.

Rody's Gunshop: on Sunapee St. in Newport, same road Stoneeagle is on. Henry and his brother Bill Rodeschin(can't remember how to spell it) are great guys, and pretty good gunsmiths.

Very small space, but good inventory. Good people, best prices in Mass.

I grew up in MA and bought my first guns in MA. This store is where I bought them all. Definite 2 thumbs up.

I'll second this one. Been treated well at Riley's.

Last time I went in Rileys (few years ago) I was looking for a Colt 1991a1. I didnt see them in any of the cases. Asked the first guy if he could order me one. His response "colts bankrupt and out of business: hey
Now the other guy behind the counter pipes up "No, they are still in business but they dont make civilian guys anymore. Only for LEO/Military." I replied with the No they are not. They are making the 1991a1. Again he replied the samething and said I would be better off with a Kimber. I insisted they were still in business. They asked another guy that works in the store and he muttered something about Colt out of business or LEO/Military only. I left shaking my head in disgust. Never been back.

I go to see Roger at:
NEW BOSTON SPORTS
16 Meetinghouse Hill Rd
New Boston, NH 03070
Phone: 603-487-3432

Hell of a guy. The place is like "Cheers" of the firearm stores. Has a nice selection of new & used and doesnt rape you as far as price is concerned. You can stop buy to just BS and have a cup of coffee.

A new gun store in Greenfield MA. M.A.D. Montague Ammo Depot. It is run by a guy that ran the same business coincidentally out of the same store about 10 years ago. He's back in business and already after a few short months planning on finding a larger place for his shop. He's got new and used guns, ammo, some hunting stuff and knives.

This place is great! Clean, bright, knowledgeable and very friendly staff. lots of great merchandise. I hope they do well and stay around for a long time to come!

It's in the Easton Industrial Park, near the 99 restaurant in Easton, close to 138.

I've never had a problem with the Powderhorn. Nate and Jay have always done right by me. I won't comment on prices because, as a low volume shop (this is liberal VT after all), a bit higher prices are par for the course. That said, their prices are very fair, just not internet prices. Additionally, they will tell you their cost so you can see that they are not ripping you off.

Just offered as a counter point. YMMV.

Newington Gun Exchange has been the most helpful to me since I have been out of the military/ Ask for Jeff regarding any state law questions that you have, he is very knowledgeable and does not make you feel like you are bothering him!

Newington Gun Exchange

They are fantastic! Between Lars and Jeff you cant get any better. SUPER helpful and informative. I have made quite a few purchases there in the past 4 months and all have been very good and I always felt I got a very good deal. I do drive 50 min to purchase from them.

You cant go wrong buying there.
