S&W M&P series introduced the ergonomic interchangeable grips to the pistol market, they have been a HUGE success, selling like hotcakes. S&W really hit the nail on the head, introducing a truly ergonomic design with a striker firing mechanism. People get their hands on one and often find they just don't want to put it down it fits their hand so well, none of that 2x4 feeling you get from a Grock. All those great features and no reputation for blowing up, what's not to like about that?

Edited to add: I forgot to mention, they also haven't had a single person go to prison for bribing public officials to buy their products, unlike Glock, which is up to about 7 or 8 by now.

When did those come out? Got my first Walther P99 in 2002 and it had interchangable backstraps.

Second generation of the P99 came out in 2005, the interchangeable backstraps came along with the second generation striker fired pistols, S&W and Walther were working closely together on several things before that, working together on the striker fired design, same year as the M&P striker fired autos. Previous generation P99 was a double action/single action.

I bought an M&P9c recently and I can't put it down, but this (the Glock) was to be a gift for my little brother for Christmas.

Maybe I'll just get him an M&P too.

My little brother and I both shoot full size CZs. Mag compatibility is nice.

M&P pistols are like AR15s and Black Rifle Disease, get one and they start breeding, soon you have a safe full. I have a 5" Pro Series CORE in 9mm, a full size 40, and a 9mm Shield.

No relation to the Sigma. Its a small and very light auto pistol, doesn't have the changeable backstraps but is still very ergonomic, and is a single stack, the little 9mm I have is a delight, its very accurate and easy to shoot, people just love them, we have some guys over on the MP Pistol board who have several Shields! I don't know why they have several of the same model, but whatever floats your boat!

Keep in mind that those tiny pistols in 40 S&W (all brands) have exceedingly stiff recoil springs, I bought the 9 because I already knew I couldn't handle the stiffer springs on the 40 cal, I can handle the 9mm just fine.

since this veered from G19 to compact carry let me throw this in.

I've got about 300 rounds down it now and I really like it.

it's pretty much the anti glock though, aluminum and steel, S/A only, hammer.

this version came with Hogue grips.

Not sure if you missed what I said, but I was saying that the Walther P99 already had interchangeable backstraps in their striker fired P99 and that was in 2002. The pistol was released well prior to 2002, and the M&P still wasn't out then. Nothing about the original Walther P99 is S&W. The DA/SA aspect of the pistol was not even part of the discussion on backstraps.

Wiki says Walther began producing the P99 in 1997 and that the M&P began production in 2005.

Whatever.
