To my understanding .45 brass isn't long enough to head space right and hold the ingredients and crimp.

what are they fired in?
oh, i see,  not your average .38 shotshell, its all internal. any of the many calibers based on the '06 should work, too many to list here. |

I'm reading now that the 06 extractor grove is too shallow to use in a 45.

that could be, the .45 captures the rim as it feeds, it doesn't snap over .

My uncle used to make them out of .308 brass using #9 shot with a .44 round ball on top and crimped over that. They would cycle in his 1911 with a light spring in it.

Do you recall how he made them? It looks like I'll have to order online or get .308 brass and work some loads.
