I remember back in the late 70's early 80's when I first started shooting. Anywhere you went to get a box of ammo. You had to show your drivers license and fill out name address and phone number before it could be sold. I've done this on many single boxes of 50 .22LR ammo. They finally did away with the requirement and the guns stores were VERY happy about it. It didn't work then and it's not going to work now.

More ammo purchases are a sign that shooting is even more popular now than it was then. I see all of this as severe knee jerk reactions to recent events and politicians trying to get as many votes as they can in an election year.

It went away when the FOPA went into effect, it was one of the many benefits of the FOPA which got rid of many of the restrictions and regulations placed on us by the 68 GCA. Its one of the reasons I hear some moron whine in GD about how the hughes amendment banned new machine guns, they can never find the good things that the FOPA did. Reagan did a lot of good for firearms owners by signing the FOPA into law. All the cheap surplus rifles and parts kits that came in and the cheap surplus ammunition as well as doing away with the ID requirement and the form for ammunition sales were all things that were part of the FOPA. THe FOPA also reigned in a lot of ATF abuses that were getting out of hand at the time and had been since the Carter administration. I just have to remind myself how many young people are on ARF.com especially in GD.
