Not really close to Herndon, but not that far away is the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico.
Udvay Hazy and the NRA Museum are must see. If you like the outdoors Great Falls National park is nice. |

Nothing on their web site about being closed, they do mention the construction on the new phase. http://www.usmcmuseum.com/ But I have not been there in person in a couple years. |
