Doesn't appear to a random killing. Something more is going on here.

Likely a jilted boyfriend.

But that is just my opinion.

Local news is reporting it as a disgruntled ex-employee.

They have been chasing him up I-81 - last I heard he is now East of Staunton according to people texting me about it.

From the local news webpage...

"The suspect in Wednesday morning's shooting of a pair of WDBJ employees has been identified as 41-year-old Vester Lee Flanagan II.

He was believed to be driving a 2009 silver or gray Mustang with the Virginia license plate WZE 8846.

Most recent reports are now saying he is is driving a cream colored Dodge Charger in the area of Verona. No tag is currently known."

AND McAwful is ALREADY chanting "Gun Control"...

Very sad. He videoed the shooting himself, and it's been posted. It's floating around. Very tough to watch.

This is so sad. Im hearing he thought he lost his job over racism which lead to this, but that is hearsay at this point. A guy i work with went to school with adam ward. Prayers to the familys and wdbj7 crew. I hope the asshole pulls through with a full recovery and gets many many years of ass fucking.

He also apparently had worked at 5-6 other news stations in the last few years, across the country, and had filed racially-related suits/complaints on at least one occasion.

Just watched the video he took. He walked up point blank drew his gun then put it down and looked around for a few seconds. Then drew again and opened fire. They never even seen it coming.

News station manager summed it up below. Basically the guy is your typical "everything is a problem" social justice warrior type

When Bryce worked there, he quickly became difficult to work with. He was looking out for people to say things to be offended by. After many incidents of anger, they fired him and he did not take it well. The police had to escort him out. Then he filed an EEOC complaint about members of the staff making racial comments. But NONE of the complaints could be corroborated and they think they were fabricated. The investigators asked other employees and nobody heard anything racial and EEOC dismissed the complaint

Watched the video. As someone in GD said, he waited until the camera man turned back around from the scenery shot to make sure the shooting was on live TV.

I watched both the news video and the shooter's own video. I don't relish watching these, but I do so for training purposes in order to better train my students (and myself). I was amazed at how long he stood there and how no one saw him. They were very focused on the interview and they let their SA lapse. I've done a number of tv interviews over the years with local Richmond reporters and they certainly do tend to stay well focused on the interviewee. I wonder if, instead of a shoulder camera, if the camera man had used a tripod, would he have been able to turn and see the shooter coming, or at least notice that someone was standing right behind him with a gun.

The job of the cameraman is to look through the camera and make sure the picture is perfect.

The job of the reporter is to connect with their subject.

Neither job allows them to check their six during an interview.

No not really.

When I am behind the camera I am looking at audio levels, exposure, focus, etc.

It requires complete concentration.

The cameraman who interviewed my wife for CBS would have.

But I really do not think cameraman are going to switch to tripods because of one shooting.

The rarety of this is no one else was there to see him. 0645, nobody there, not even an off-camera CoC or mall person or mall security or whatever.

I agree. I think the only one who may have been able to see something was the lady they were interviewing, the other two were doing their jobs.  Something totally unexpected happened, and no blame at all can be placed on the victims.  Not that I think anyone here is "blaming" the victims, just that sometimes bad stuff happens and there's nothing we can do about it.

Thousands of people watched the video for various reasons. I watched it to learn from it and to train others how to defend themselves from an attack like this in the future, and I'm out of line? I was saddened by what I saw in this tragedy. It was a senseless killing of innocent people by a depraved, callous individual.  I study dozens of shooting videos each year, both successful self-defense videos, and sad, tragic shooting videos. I respect your opinion, and I'm sorry that you don't see the value of learning from this.

I heard, but have not been able to confirm that there was an eyewitness who saw the gun first but hid inside a store....or somewhere.

No one can blame a victim in a crime like this. Its a senseless tragedy.

I completely see the value in learning from it, but there are a LOT of professions where ones situational awareness is seriously compromised. There are times as a parent that my situational awareness is compromised by having to focus on my kids.

I don't think the observation that they were all tunnel-visioned is unfair - it just is what it is. People focusing on something are easier victims than people who have their head on a swivel.

I think the reminder to the rest of us is that when we most need to have our head on a swivel is when something is keeping us from doing it. Predators use those situations to their advantage.

I agree that they were very focused on doing their job. That would be expected of anyone. What I'm wondering is if there would be a better way for folks like this to maintain their personal safety. We've seen somewhat similar things happen before. Perhaps these news crews need someone outside of the interview watching their backs?  I'm reminded of weatherman Jim Cantore deflecting a college kid who crashed into him. Somewhat different circumstances, but an interesting video to learn from nonetheless. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzjGBTM6dFs
