Going to WI first to pick up my 7.62 LaRue from my hunting property, then have to goto IL for a wedding and flying out of Chi.  Do they care?  Best way to do it?  AFAIK it's illegal within Cook County for being an "Assault Weapon."

You will be ok. just leave it in your locked case. Let the airline know you have a rifle. they will have The tsa look it over. Get the a little earlier because tas takes their sweet ass time. I flew out of ohara last summer with 3 ar15s with no problems.

Yeah, familiar with the procedure but I usually avoid even just flying through ORD.  It'll be broken down in a Pelican case so hopefully won't even look that scary.

As crappy as the politics in Chicago is we dont have any reports of airport travelers getting arrested for checking or retrieving firearms even if they violate local ordinance. Quite a few of those reports from NYC, but not Chicago.

IL has a half assed mealy mouthed statewide transport protection that was part of the CCW law. It makes transport a state level issue, but the law doesnt specifically say it preempts local AWBs so who knows.
