Looking to buy a piece of property which adjoins a two lane state hwy.I am planning to set up a range on the back edge It is not located in any city or village boundries.Outside of a small town.
Was wondering if anyone had been thru this experience, where you might have run into any state laws, ordnances prohibiting discharging firearms within so many feet etc.of a state hwy.
Stopped at local ISP HQ, guy at desk was unsure.
Thanks in advance for your input.

You may also want to take a look at the DNR site, they may list the state law on that.

No prohibited distance from highways (which is what all public roads in IL are).  You just can not shoot on or over highway.  Highway is normally outside of ditch to outside of ditch.  Roadway is the driving surface in between.

Just remember you are responsible if a bullet leaves your property.

Call the county guys, they probably respond to calls like what your talking about more than any of the state guys do.

IIRC there may be some counties which have ordinances about discharge of a firearm within a certain distance of a residence,

most likely due to private range complaints.  Many of the "rural" counties have pretty good density even outside of city limits.

If we are talking about outside the collar counties, then most likely you are GTG, but the county sheriff is the guy you probably

need to ask.

There may be county or even municipal ordinances. I just was working on this with Lake County for a private class. The Lake County ordinance was basically not more than 3 or more houses within 300 yards and property can't be zoned residential.
