A dozen felony charges?  Ouch.  That's not going to buff right out!

http://www.gunssavelife.com/?p=14739

Nick Rabenau, the head of Type A Training Group from the Galesburg area, was arrested Monday on a host of charges, including a dozen counts of forgery, for signing off on Illinois concealed carry training certificates when he was not properly certified as an instructor.

Sounds to me like there's going to be more to come, since he's bragged he's trained 200 for IL CCW.

In the early days of Illinois CCL and the mandatory training, Mr. Rabenau had a lot to say -- none of it positive -- about civilian and NRA trainers. It strikes me as odd that someone unwilling or unable to even get himself on the list of ISP approved trainers would be so vocal.
It do appear karma may be coming around for a visit.

And was he in possession of a firearm during these classes or at any time?

What I have seen by all accounts, he is unable to possess or obtain a FOID card due to domestic violence charges.

Shouldn't he be also charged under federal charges for illegal possession?

From the story in the McDonough County Voice back in October of 2013:

Next, residents should take a firearms class specifically for concealed carry offered by approved instructors, which are listed on the ISP website.

Rabenau stresses that the qualifications necessary to receive instructor approval aren’t strict enough and suggests people research their instructors.

“Be careful on who you pick as a training provider,” Rabenau said. “They opened it up to NRA instructors, which could be you, a school teacher, or a farmer … at the end of a two day course you’re an instructor.”

I suppose their actually being an instructor that's recognized by the ISP regardless of their high-speed low-drag parachuting canines out of helicopters into Vietnamese tunnels super hooah-ocity helps too...

The funny thing is that he was in the NRA Pistol Instructor's course that a few of us attended. He seemed pretty sharp and motivated at the time, but went too heavy on the HSLD terminology. One Marine Corps Vietnam vet in the class remarked that he couldn't understand a word he said following a jargon-heavy presentation exercise.

ETA: Prior military training and experience help a lot, but being able to communicate, and sometimes translate the information effectively with the students is the important part.

He has been on our radar for some time...this is a bizarre individual!

It was a long time coming.  Several reputable instructors in my area were surprised it took this long.

Hmm.......what if someone PAID him to do this in order to create a problem that only a change in law would "fix".  He would not be the first radical to strike a deal.  This was a common practice of black panthers in the 60s.

I am confident that Mr. Rabenau is not part of some ingenious to attempt to challenge the idiocy of firearms laws.
