Is it just me or anyone else notice a $20.00 increase in their Cox bill ? I've added no extra services of any kind.

WHAT the Hell.....?

We have basic tv package with 8 HBO channels and middle speed internet......was $161.85 per month. New bill....181.55

That's fucking ridiculous, we maybe watch 10 channels total, the rest is Spanish crap and they won't let me trade channels for a shit ton of channels we pay for and can't watch. I've just about had it. Time to cut the cord.

We bought 2 fire sticks and were slowly learning how to use them, guess it's time to speed that up a bit.

Any of you guys use that antenna guy'? Or recommend a good one for picking up the local stations. I'm in North Las Vegas near the broadacres flea market and have a clear shot to the mountains all around.

Don't have an antenna, but I had an increase in my bill as well. I only get ISP 50mbps with no contract, so my bill was $74/mo. Now $79/mo.

Kinda pissed me off, however they are still light years ahead of Century Link in speed, so we're pretty much stuck.

My Cox cable bill used to be in the $160 range when I had TV and internet.  Many years back, I switched to DirecTV for TV, which cut the Cox bill down to about $52.  With the promotions at the time, DirecTV was about less than $60, so I was saving about $60 a month.  As the specials ran out, my DirecTV bill climbed.  It's been static at $93 for all the channels we get for about a year.

I had the preferred internet service, which has steadily risen from the $52 to $55 to $59 to $62 to $68 and this month to $72.  When it went from $62 to $72 back in February, I called and they gave me a $5/month off for 12 months.  Now the bill went up again in October and I called again.  I'm still getting that, which is why it ONLY went to $72.99.  I told them to make their best pitch now, because if they can't keep it the same as it was, I'll be looking for an option and setting that option up.  The next call they get from me will be a disconnection order with no chance of keeping me at that point.

They offered me the premier service with a locked rate for 24 months at $69.99.  I took it as it was $1 more than I had been paying, now locked (there is another price increase coming in Feb of 2017 BTW) for 24 months and 3x faster service.

It's certainly a racket...just like SiriusXM that I have to call and stop the $100/6-month service and threaten to turn it off to get the $25/6-month service.

I dumped my cable tv from cox and kept the internet only, I get all the local channels without an antenna.  The tvs are still hooked up to the coax cable as it was when I had cable tv, I don't get any special channels but I do still receive all local channels including the HD versions.  The Firestick is an ok option and the only stick option if you're talking about a Kodi type usage, although the problem with them is they have a very small amount of memory for buffer memory.

We had dish for he longest time, I was always happy with that until I mistakenly opened the bill, that was the wife's to handle. I had no idea she was paying $280 monthly but we had damn near every channel.
That's how we did things, she paid TV and internet I handle everything else. I think we had that sprint internet too and it was horrid.

My only issue as mentioned is even with cox internet the firestick & kodi (we have the jail broken ones) are terribly slow, I get impatient with it pretty quickly but it does work.

I think this weekend I'm going to make a run to frys and pickup one of the HD antennas, and give it a try with just the firestick/Kodi/Amazon and see how things work out. Cox is definitely the only way to go for internet but the tv is just way out of control.

We were using a firestick but it was slow with a lot of buffering.  Bought one of the Kodi boxes and haven't looked back.  Guy is local and returns calls if you have any questions.  We met him at one of the home shows.

I installed my OWN modem a year ago and activated it through COX. Magically they were charging me to 'rent' it from them. I didn't really notice the charges because I am on auto-pay.

They we also charging me for way more Internet speed than I needed.

Luckily a buddy of mine caught it when he was visiting one night and I was complaining about my bill.

I called COX and got it straightened out. They credited my account for the overages and deleted the extra speed I didn't need.

Beware, they are some sneaky bastards.

ETA: ESPECIALLY if you are on auto-pay.

There is no charge for Kodi.

You don't need a firestick to get Kodi, its a series of programs that you add to the firestick.  I know people that have put Kodi on a computer and tablet as well.  Google Kodi and you'll get an idea of what it's about.    It's a bit complicated to explain so you have to take its use with some downfalls such as some of the channels(websites) run slow during peak usage, but I love it and I run it off a firestick.

ETA  KODI  is not the Kbox thing in the link.  They just added Kodi to the Kbox.

I've lived in Vegas 4 years and only use Cox for internet. Other then that it's Netflix or Hulu for all my shows or I pull out the bunny ears if I want to watch something live (like the World Series). In four years I watched my internet price go from $52 to $55 to $62 to $72, etc. Seriously, at the rate they increase their internet costs it will be $100 per month in just a few years just to have a internet connection. How's there's not more public outcry and push back is beyond me.

A couple of things I've learned about Cox in the last four years:

1. Don't pay for more internet then you need. I was on the 50 Mbps plan and after the cost reached the $70's I had enough. I have a Mbps download tester app on my phone and I was only ever getting 23-27 Mbps. So I called and dropped to the next lowest plan that's 15 Mbps. Surprise surprise, literally had zero effect on my internet quality. Netflix and Hulu never buffer, wifi on my phone is the same. I literally cannot tell a single difference between my internet now and before with the higher Mbps plan. Made me mad I was paying extra each month for nothing (at least in my case).

2. Literally call them every year. They will knock at least $10 off your monthly bill. I'm not an asshole. I don't threaten to leave or tell them they are a shitty company. I literally just ask what the process is to cancel. I'll usually same something like "well I just want to know the time frame I need to call ahead to cancel my internet because if I switch to Centruy Link I'll want to cancel you guys right away so I'm not double billed for internet over a weekend if your closed." Boom, quick transfer to a "retaining specialist" that will ask my why I want to leave. I'll say "Century Link is cheaper then you" and Bam, instant 12 month discount offer to stay. Repeat 12 months later. Paying retail is for suckers.

3. They inform you of the rate increases in your bill the month prior in like 10 font on the back. Those suckers really like to hide it. But it will tell you exactly what your next months increased bill will be.

4. Buy your own modem. What do they charge? Like $5 per month? I bought my own at Walmart for $75 and I've had it since June of 2013. Per month cost  that's $1.82. And that amount goes down every additional month it lasts.

Nope. Just hear the ads on KOMP.
Just throwing out options. Its streaming so I'm guessing its similar to kodi.

Well I went out and bought an HD antenna, put it up on the patio roof quickie style and got 8 channels right of the bat. All in HD and surprised at how good the picture is. That was Friday afternoon.

Went right in the house and called COX to cancel our TV portion of the bill, here's what they did. Upped my internet speed to the highest level for our area, added more channels for me and the wife and redid the whole house (3 berooms) to this digital deal (no cost for install) and dropped our bill to $150 even per month.

So we agreed we could live with that and are staying on for now.

It was pretty obvious they don't want to loose customers, so I agree that calling them is a really good idea.

Kodi is just a media player, it has no content.

You *do* know where all that "free" streaming content comes from, right?

A friend has a Cable Crusher box she has been happy with. Streams various content form the internet. It was a one time purchase of $300. At a casual glance it looks like a set top box. I'm guessing it's some sort of Linux appliance that runs through torrent sites.

i just checked mine and the internet went up again to 62.99 or something, lowest speed i believe, but still enough to stream.  The data cap did change as of November from 120 gigs or so to 1 terabyte, so that could explain the latest increase.

OP-

To answer your question:

We had DirecTV for years and got pissed at the ridiculous price too. We had the everything package and figured out we we mostly watching ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. All of which we can get OTA out of Reno. A new movie every Saturday Night. What a joke! Some piece of junk you wouldn't watch anyway and the same 5 movies on loop the rest of the week.

I put up and antenna and bought a Channel Master DVR+. Works more or less just like the DTV DVR. We record the shows and watch them later. It has the same time skip forward to zoom past commercials, etc. For movies we buy them from Amazon, etc. and it's way cheaper than the everything movie package we had.

Channel Master DVR+

No additional fees - buy once and you own it. It needs to be connected to the internet to get the two week TV guide. We ended up buying a universal remote. We didn't like theirs very much plus we can control everything with Universal.

Another $3/month increase from DTV.  I'm done with them.  I ordered a Renegade RG6 Pro streaming box and keeping Cox for the internet service only.  Everything that I could ever get from DTV, and it's a one time buy price.  No monthly except my internet service.  You guys might want to take a look if you're interested.

The Renegade box I bought runs on Android.  It has a custom version of Kodi with other apps pre-loaded, that give access to all of the movies, shows, live channels, etc.  You will need at least 15mbit/sec internet DL speed, and 35mbit/sec+ for live streams.  I have 150+ with Cox, and have no issues with buffering streams.  I've been quite impressed with it and have since cancelled Netflix and DirecTV.
