Why not finish Dead last
Don't worry though, more money can fix it

Look on the bright side, G: Sandoval's billion dollar tax increase (the largest increase in Nevada history) will fix it!

Yep, don't go to the root of the problem, just throw money at the problem. That always works!

It takes a village.

You guys are the "glass half empty" types aren't ya

We Nevadans are leading the pack! The goal is creating an ignorant, government dependant population. At the same time, spending as much money as possible to do so..we are on top

Did anyone look at WHAT they used to measure us?

Looks like we are "Last" because we do not have enough social welfare programs to suit them.
Given the opportunity to craft the test to the desired answer we could come in at any ranking desired.
A more balanced recent survey put us at #27, about at the middle.
These surveys are all crap anyway.
They still claim our teachers are among the lowest paid while ignoring little things like those same teachers not having to pay state income tax.
They also ignore our transient population and outsize growth in "Diversity", Illegals who do not speak English, and many do not speak Spanish either.
We get the ignorant kids from other states then when they do poorly here it's all OUR fault.
In my experience Nevada educated kids do as well as any others, not that the others do that great either thanks to "Progressive" education pratices.

Each of the last three legislative sessions have resulted in ever larger record tax increases, always for "EDUCATION"!
So where has all that money gone?
Hint, look for the union label.

As a product of the Nevada public education system, I take offense to this...

Of course, I'm a product of the 90's Nevada education system, when the teachers weren't nearly as liberal (in comparison to today) and seemed to actually give a fuck about your education.

Like Mr. Roman, Mr. Patterson, and Mrs. Parks did.  There's a reason why after 20+ years, I still remember those teachers names.  Outstanding teachers.  I ran into Mrs. Parks at Costco not too long ago, and she looked right at me and said, " Hi USMC6337"

So far, I'm not too impressed with Douglas County Schools with my son's education, and I've been told their teachers are the highest paid in the State.

The very fact that you recognized those teachers as being great, and they more than likely saw the potential in you, says that you would have more than likely succeeded even if you were to attend today's schools. And if you dig deeper, and look at why some achieve and others don't you'll find that parents are a key factor - if not the deciding factor, on how one goes through and comes out of the system.

The 40% dropout rates keep the casinos stocked with low wage workers.

Money doesn't fix things.   Washing DC and Baltimore have some of the highest per student spending and look how they are doing.

I have 3 sons...
Oldest graduated 4th in his class of 700+ , moved on to ASU and got a degree in mechanical engineering, 2nd one is 2nd year of high school , 3rd is in 8th grade.

All 3 have had straight A's all the way through school , and are honors students. All 3 were born and raised here.

The school system works, the teachers I have met and dealt with have been exemplary.

What kids need is more parental involvement. Parenting , it is a full time job. Stop buying kids behavior and start controlling it. The learning starts at home.

Did they come back to Nevada?

I went to Reno high  and UNR, but rarely see anyone I went to school with.  They've mostly moved on, only coming back when things go bad.

Well, you did a good job. You are not the average parent that makes for the bad stats. It's ridiculous to demand miracles from teachers to fix the shithead kids they raised and shoved off to school so they could smoke dope and watch Maury.

Nev. lawmakers adopt Common Core high school math standards

CARSON CITY, Nev.

Nevada lawmakers have given final approval to adopting Common Core math standards for high school students.

The 12-member Legislative Commission voted 11-1 on Monday to approve the regulations, which have already been through several levels of vetting. Republican Assemblyman Ira Hansen said he voted against the measure because his constituents don't like Common Core.
