NN has popped up on our radar as a place to retire. The Winnemucca has some interesting places, to us anyway..  Input, thoughts, etc is appreciated.  The spouse will probably seek PT employment, myself i'm in the golden years.  I know NFA it gtg .

If you like the wide open outdoors with millions of acres of public land you will be right at home. Endless miles of dirt roads to ride ATVs. You don't need a hunting license to hunt varmints like coyotes, there is good deer hunting but you need to draw a tag. You can buy two lion tags per year. Usually plenty of chucker. Open carry and shall issue CCW. For me at least, Nevada is hard to beat.

Not that much of an "outdoors" person due to disabilities.  The less people the better, even a 2 - 5 ac lot beats what our area has turned in to.  Driving 5 - 10 mins for open shooting works, especially if there's lot's of small targets of opportunity.

Biggest drawback for the aging population in the Mucc is healthcare.  The hospital can give good care (not always though) tends to charge huge prices.  Topped off with iffy billing practices, like double billing or sending accounts off to collections ASAP.  That way they can charge off the account and still appear in the black.

A lot of folks just drive to Reno for basic healthcare.  Definitely plan to drive for any specialists.  There are a few that make the trip, but only come like once a month or so.

If you have VA bennys, I understand the VA clinic here is good.  Still looking at going to Reno for anything other than basic care.

Otherwise, it's life in a small town.  With all the usual perks and drawbacks.

You can drive from one end of town to the other in 5 minutes.  There are a total of 5 traffic lights.  There are some options for living 10-20 minutes from town that will have you close to and with easy access to outdoor activities.

A friend is a realtor.  She just listed a 3bed/2bath with a shop/garage on about 15 acres for $135,000.  BLM land is right across the highway, 12 miles out of town.

Winter can be cold as hell, like 20 below and lower.  Beautiful area though.

Knew i forgot something . Winter... outside the cold, average snow fall. Here we get snow, but with the altitude 4500' + unless it's overcast fro a few days the snow on most roads is gone .

Biggest draw back is medical care.

It does get cold, but it doesn't last forever. The cold snaps usually only last a week or so. Same with the major heat waves. 95+ in the area right now.

Gun laws are hard to beat. We actually travel 100 miles TO Winnemucca at least once a month for our normal supplies and groceries. Anything that can't be found in Winnemucca or Elko can be here in a couple days online, so plan accordingly.

Don't bring fancy cars unless you want to drive to Reno.

Simple, laid back with some draw backs. But the internet ordering and shipping helps offset that.

To me the winters are mild with not a lot of snow. There is a county shooting range just outside of town but I don't know anything more about it.

I used to work there. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Great people, nice shooting park and great outdoor stuff to do.

Pretty much the same here on snow.  Only time I've needed 4x4 so far is to get out of the driveway.  First year I was here, we had snow that stuck around for a week or so, but the roads were fine in the first day.

Elevation is roughly the same.

Winter before last we went a month without getting above freezing.  That sucked taking care of livestock in those temps.  Otherwise, we get really cold for a week or so, then lows run into the teens and highs go mid 30s to low 40s.  Needed way more snow this year.

Going into summer the worry now is fires, like lots of other places in the west.

Ellko is full of thieves everyday you hear of a house being robbed quads and motorcycles being stolen.  My quad trailer was stolen a year ago. It took me three days to find it and the thieves said they had no idea how it got there so no arrest were made.

We have had two unsolved murders in the last couple of years with many more shootings.

Elko is like the old West.  You have all of the vices and Gunfights to boot.

If you drink and drive they will get you here. The Cops sit outside the bars and wait.  If your leaving after 11pm you are more than likely driving intoxicated.

Elko is definitely not the town I grew up in.  I moved back after being away for 30 years and the mentality changed with the mines being here.
Now the mentality is fuck it if I break it the mine will buy a new one.

Ditto. I grew up in Elko, moved away 11 years ago but still in the area. I hate having to go to Elko. It takes forever to do anything, busy, crowded. I would not get too concerned about carrying there, would enjoy to go there and have a beer. No more, pack all the time, always watch your 6, plan stops, and don't leave anything un tied, un locked or out in the open. For me it I closer, so that is the main reason I go there.

If I had to/ chose to move, Winnemucca no brainer.

Hell, if it weren't for employment (or the lack there of) I would move back to Wells in a heartbeat. My wife is even on board with it.

Elko wasn't on the radar. One of our concerns, due to the less populated area, is tweakers. Aware there's no place that doesn't  claim them as residents.  However more rural is or was a prime breeding ground for them.
The up side is the spouse agrees a high power bolt action and NV would be another household expense.

Seems like there's a decent amount of you located, or know people in or around that area,. That's a PLUS.

The problem with Elko is people from every state in America/World is here for the mine work, what they don't understand is that it maybe six months or more before they get a job and most all the support for the mines don't pay as much, so this brings all of their problems as well.

The good thing about Winnemucca is that it's only a couple of hours from Reno of you feel you need some big city life.

I don't live in Winnemucca, but I go there for work every few months.
It has everything I need in a town with the added benefit of being small and surrounded by millions of acres of open, accessible land.
If I could talk my wife into moving, Winnemucca would be high on my list of spots to land.
