NV's,

I downloaded the resource map from your stickies, and went through all of the other shooing information.  My folks live in Henderson, and I will be out next week.  Just found out that my nephew wants to learn to hunt, so it looks like I will be bringing out something to get him started in shooting.  I am looking for some general information to see if we can get by shooting on public land, or whether we need to find a proper range.  It looks like Desert Sportsman's requires a membership.  I think I missed that boat, as I am leaving Saturday.

So.  My folks are in Anthem, in S. Henderson.  Sloan canyon to the east is listed as closed in the stickies.  It looks like maybe Red Rocks is to the west, and if, I think it is also closed to shooting.  I'll be in rental car, not my Jeep, so trying to understand if it would be worth it to try and find a shooting spot.  Maybe South?  We'll probably only be shooting a 22LR or maybe my 17 HMR, no AR's on this trip.  And I have been shooting on Public Land in Colorado, Washington and NM for 30 years, so I have the general rules clear for Federal Land.  My brother may be cool with the hunting at some point, my SIL not so much, so I want to try and not have any drama with the boys, shooting and LE.

Thanks,

Craig

Both have courtesy ranges. Check the websites for days and times.

Lovell canyon on the west side is ok shooting, especially for .22. Take Blue diamond west, headed toward Pahrump and it's on your right as you come down the hill. Interestingly enough, it's located almost directly south of Desert Sportsmans range. It's not bad, maybe even see some snow up there...

Thank you both.  I really like the idea of shooting on public land, so as to not have to deal with the complexities of an established range. Especially a range that rents FA.  I'd have to hit something big at a casino to be able to afford that.

Evil, the Lovell spot looks pretty good.  If memory serves, Bass Pro is on Blue Diamond and I15.  We might be able to make a day of it, including a stop to look at mounts and outdoor gear.  In comparing the google image with the resource guide in your hometown stickies, it looks like Lovell falls outside of the Red Rock/Spring Mtn. park stuff.  Probably just good old BLM land.  Do you think 45acp pistol would be ok there if I am safe?  Wonder if Bass pro sells tannerite ;^)

And I really do not need to see snow.  Got enough here at home, in NM.  But I think those are the mountains that my mom and dad go on about, when they get snow.  It might be fun to see them up close.

Thanks,

Craig

BRPC, no FA rentals and RO's are not range Nazis.

CS,

From the BRPC website:

"The Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club range features a Courtesy Range open to for use by limited membership on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturdays, Sundays and when the
Federal Holiday falls on Monday between 8 AM and 4 PM, weather and events permitting, with 10 shooting bays and 2 shotgun stations. All shooters must provide their own
targets, ammunitions, firearms safety gear and etc."

I think this means that the range is open to the public on those days?

I have the range bookmarked.

thank you kindly,

Craig

Yes, courtesy range is open to the public on those days. Not exactly sure what the fee is but its reasonable. If it's real busy they will limit your time on the bay to like an hour or something. If people aren't waiting in line to shoot, not so much. They have target boards, covered shooting areas, benches for the 75-100 yrd bays. They might even have the 200 yrd bay open.

I think the range fee is $10 and the target frames are $10 w/ $5 returned if you don't shoot 'em.
You'll need to bring your own target and method of affixing them, eyes, and ears.  Water is available from the range office for $1/bottle IIRC.

That all sounds very reasonable.  Thanks again.

i usually go near nelson for free shooting https://goo.gl/maps/k4HwP
sometimes go a little further down the 165 when im done and stop in the general store would be neat for the kid. Have him look in the freezer.

Usually when I'm done I'll get a burger at the dillinger in boulder city their dillinger burger has brisket and bacon on it.

bcrp is nice too I just like a little more solitude and nature nelson is just a bit further drive probably a wash between gas and range fees.

my brother in law goes near indian springs I've never been so can't give you a map.

Thanks again everyone.  I have all the data and images/links saved.  Looks like you all covered all the bases for me, unless my nephews google full auto rentals in Las Vegas.  I'll be headed your way in the morning.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you,

Craig

Just wanted to thank everyone.  We ended up doing the BLM area, shooting out on the west side, in Lovell Canyon.  Had a great time, and it was very relaxed.  My bro and nephews did well, and figured out that Call of Duty is slightly different than shooting a gun for real.

We stopped at the biker bar/ burger place at the top of the mountain, and had great food, and the boys got to watch a gal posing for the local biker calender.  She had more tats than clothes, so all in all a gold star day for a 19 and 17 year old.

Thanks again for the help.

Once my SIL saw the pic's on my brother's phone, they got deleted before I got the rest of the shooting pictures transferred.  Sorry man, I was so hungry by the time we got there, all I could think about was food.......And being thankful I did not stick my rental car.  I call NM roads gravel roads.  Nope, you all have real gravel roads in the back country.  I hope Enterprise can buff out the thorn scratches
