I am looking for some camp sight recommendations. State park, state forest, whatever.

Some place within three-ish hours of Appleton would be nice.

So what are your favorite places to camp in the area?

Herbster town campground on the shore of Lake Superior.  Stretching your 3 hours just a teeny bit, maybe, but well worth it.  Great swimming and you can wade out almost 500 yards most days.

Lake Owen Twin Lakes Campground.  Some sites have direct access to the lake.  Beautiful.

I would semi-hijack this by asking the same question but without the travel limitation -- all time favorite?

we like .gov Thompson state park - like 20 mins west of Crivitz,  newer park (built in 2000 I think), facilities are nice, nice trails, right on the caldron falls flowage. Usually not a bunch of people there.

Rock Island state park. It takes a couple of ferry rides to get there...

Mauthe Lake is nice for a general, easy-to-get-to place and IIRC it is by Kewauskum.  The prettiest place in the state is likely Copper Falls but that is a hike.

Perrot State Park in Trempealeau!  Love that place!

Turtle Flambeau Flowage a little north of Mercer.  Primative, remote camp sites all over the flowage.  Only catch is you need a boat to get to them.

Egg Harbor Campground and RV Resort

Worked there for five summers, Mike and Deb (the owners) are great people and it is a very nice, extremely well maintained place.
