THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT My truck was located in my driveway about 100 feet from the road. I live in an older neighborhood with very little "rif-raf" and no rental properties. I can't believe someone had the nerve to walk up my driveway, rifle through my truck, riffle through my wife's truck all the while my front light and no doubt my motion lights were on. In my truck, they left a first aid kit, case of cds, a full G27 mag and some other crap. My wife's truck had a phone charger in it but they didn't take anything. Anyone who knows me well knows I love baseball and softball. It makes me sick to think the equipment I cared for for so long is gone in an instant. The "value" of those items to them is a dimebag or a bump. To me, those items represent memories and lots of fun. My dad's Bill Buckner first base mitt was in there. That thing was older than me. I think that's what has me most upset. I really feel I let my dad down. If anyone knows or hears of one, I'm desperately searching for a Bill Buckner first base mitt made by Macgregor. Here it is ***UPDATE*** I found my stuff. Whoever took it from my truck went around the back side of my yard, down a hill, and dumped everything out. They took two things. An older Louisville Slugger and a small $10 Nebo flashlight. My hundred dollar gloves and my dad's old glove were just laying there. My entire GHB was dumped out and scattered a bit. There was plenty of fun stuff to play with in there but I'm assuming they were looking for something easy to sell. It's been there since the night it went missing because it was covered in mud a soaking wet. The ants were the worst part. The GHB was a simple backpack which is now filled with them. Dan, IM incoming. |

Sorry that happened to you. I had my tackle box stolen out of my truck(window broken) a few years ago and I was devastated. It's cost me about $500 to try and replace everything. I really wanted back the lure that I caught my first northern on when I was a kid.

First off, this really sucks. It's hard to describe the psychological impact of this to someone that has not been a larceny victim. It's even worse when someone has invaded the sanctity of your home instead of just a vehicle, and the feelings of helplessness and anger are hard to unravel and contain for a few days at least.

That sucks. I always say that the only thing the middle east got right was cutting the hands off of thieves.
Be on alert for a while. It's not uncommon for thieves to come back and hit you a second time. Even if they have no interest in guns, they now know you have one, and may pass that info along to their upstanding cohorts. |

I've had WAY too many things stolen from me in the past.
Recently I came across a bat bag, a bat and a right handed mitt, all in great shape! Give me a shout, there are yours if you want them. I'm only two minutes away. See an IM for my number. |

FYI, Robbery is when someone confronts you and takes property under violence or the threat of violence. I mention it because everyone that comes home to a house that's been broken into says they've been robbed, and it's a totally different crime and possible circumstances. Just Saying. Hope those responsible get caught, as I can understand the pain and irritation the crime gives you.

It's really weird. I haven't slept well since that night. I'm in Madison in an ok neighborhood. That's what is so surprising. I also realized just tonight, my GHB was in the truck. Probably $150 worth of stuff in it. Luckily I hadn't ordered a new bag yet. It just sucks so much to have to start over on soft ball and rebuilding a new GHB. The anger is the emotion I'm having a hard time with. I don't know if I could control myself if I saw someone with my property. I almost hope it doesn't surface on Craigslist, I don't want to do anything dumb...

I do understand the feeling, some idiot smashed my window and stole my radio at work. I felt odd for a week afterwards. |

That really, really sucks. I can understand the sentimental loss––no money can make up for that.
Unfortunately, thefts from vehicles are really common. They might not be "big" crimes, but they have personal impact to the victims. The cops I know are pretty happy when we can find the people doing it. It might not the "crime of the century", but the victims are happy to get their stuff back, and know the suspect got caught. These kinds of incidents are why I'm not a fan of leaving guns in vehicles, even in nice or rural neighborhoods. I hope that anyone who leaves guns inside their vehicle locks the vehicle doors, AND locks the gun up inside using a chain, cable, lockbox, etc. (No, you shouldn't have to do this, but that's the reality of our times.) |

A big thanks to Unique for hooking me up with a glove.
If anyone has any leads on any Camelbak or similar hydration packs, let me know. I need to start my reconstruction of my GHB. I am very budget minded so I'm not very picky. Molle straps would be nice, color doesn't mattr much. Thanks! |

get a car alarm that pages you.
obviously shooting someone over breaking into your vehicle is not advised, but you can shine a light on them and 99% of the time they will run. if they dont. have a 1# jug of fox labs pepper spray and hose the fucker down. it has a 15' reach iirc. its coined "hell in a can" and i can attest to this name. |

I have a great idea for a car security system. Put a hornet nest inside your car. Yeah, I know there are a few kinks to work out with my idea. But the basis is pretty much fail-safe. Or...if bees freak you out, keep a few of rattlesnakes in your car.
One night back in '96 I was out for a casual bike ride, and I watched my own truck drive right by me. That sucked. |

Ok, you have struck a nerve....
LOCK UP YOUR SHIT! (and if it is that valuable don't leave it in your car) Living in a "good" neighborhood means nothing. Even rich kids need drug money. Besides if you lived in the hood why would you break into stuff there? Nobody else there has shit worth taking. Glad you found your stuff. I don't mean to vent on you but a guy in my AO had a Noveske rifle and 6k in cash stolen from his UNLOCKED veh recently. I have heard some people say they leave the doors unlocked so they don't have to pay for the broken window.... The thing is, if you dont leave your gold plated baby in plain view nobody is going thru the trouble/risk of breaking your window. |

I'm dumbfounded by the people who still don't understand the simple concept of locking things down. Whether it be a vehicle or the house, you need to lock it down. I know people who still leave the house wide open all throughout the day, literally leave their home unlocked while they are away, and think nothing of it. My place is locked down while I'm away and while I'm present, locked down and defended. |

To everyone who is "dumbfounded" by me not locking my vehicle:
I have never needed to. Madison may be a big town but it's by no means BIG. I used to leave my car unlocked when I went to highschool with 520 other kids in my class. People stealing shit out of your car isn't something that happens a lot around here. Coupled with the fact that my truck sits 100+ feet from the road with my front, side and motion lights all within plain view, I wouldn't expect someone to have the balls to try that. Guess I was wrong huh? So, for everyone with the well wishes, Thank you! OLO2-My house has a security system. I do understand the SIMPLE CONCEPT of locking and protecting your things WHILE YOU ARE AWAY. ptrlcop- I'm so sorry as to have struck a nerve. I didn't know my sob story would be so offensive to you.

The nerve he said you struck is something I understand. LEO's deal with property crimes such as yours nonstop, and it takes us away from working a lot of other issues. It's a different time. I understand where you didn't feel the need to lock your stuff up. However, times change. Places change. You are still caught up in a Mayberry-ish mindset that things can't happen here. You got your stuff back. As you know you are very very lucky, and I can relate to the feelings of relief and thankfullness you have. Just don't take it personal when those of us that see the darker sides of people try to turn this into a learning point for you. Don't stay in the mindset that you don't need to lock your stuff up, even in a secure alarmed area. You never lived in an area you didn't need to. You just never got victimized from it, even back in the day when you were growing up. Predators are everywheres, and have been for some time. They will exploit whatever weaknesses they can with you, and false senses of security are the biggest ones I see exploited. It could have merely been property crimes this time. Another predator may be into violent crimes against you or your loved ones, and use the same exploitations. See why its important?
Again, glad you got your stuff back. Don't get butt hurt from some trying show you something to learn from and why its important. |
