Hey guys, I tried using the archives for the WI Hometown section, but my browser keeps saying the "page cannot be found" for all sections so I can't look at the "WI Ranges" section (most importantly)

Since I can't access that information I was hoping to stop in and say hello as a new member of the forum and see where others in my area like to shoot.

I have been looking to start shooting at McMiller Sports in Eagle, but it'sa 45 min drive so I would prefer somewhere closer if at all possible. There used to be a gravel quarry just north of Janesville that was open to shooters, but people kept leaving a mess and it was closed from what I understand. I really like outdoor locations and members-only ranges are great, but I may be moving soon and don't want to join any local ranges until I know my plans.

I really wish I had a place in the country. Ranges are fun because you can meet other enthusiasts, but I really like the freedom to shoot when and how I want. I just bought my first AR and a new Pistol and I haven't been shooting in over 2 years so I really want to get out this weekend and punch some paper.

Any suggestions? There used to be many great places in the Janesville area to shoot. I remember being little in the Scouts and going to Camp Indian Trails and hearing gunshots at their range. I also remember a range our near County Road O just south of the Janesville DMV. Unfortunately most of these places are dead and gone.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,

Aaron

There's a club in Stoughton, $100 first year, $70 for renewal, indoor pistol range, outdoor rifle/pistol, indoor archery. Not what you are asking for , since it's a club and you aren't looking to join one at this time, but it's about 1/2 from J'ville.

Great. Thanks. Although I don't want to join a range quite yet, it is an option to consider once i'm settled in somewhere. I am recent graduate looking for a job so I don't quite know where i'm going to end up yet. If I end up in Madison that would be a good option.

Thanks for the input

the one n of janesville on newville rd had some asshats shooting over the top of the quarry wall and were hitting a house downrange on top of the usual trashing of the property. not a club fan myself. I'd rather drive 1.5 hrs to yellowstone than shoot at a club.

I am growing not real fond of clubs either - actually, getting bored with them would be pretty accurate. At one time, I maintained memberships at Winnequah, Beloit Rifle Club and Stoughton (let all but the Beloit membership expire). Winnequah is by far the nicest of the three, and seemed the least likely to run into an anti-black rifle type (Stoughton being the most likely).

It sucks, but there really isn't many fun places to shoot something other than paper off a bench in this area...

I'm just north of Janesville a bit, but usually end up going to McMiller's too.

I wish there were a better alternative nearby, but I haven't found it yet.

The clubs need to realise that alot of their older members (mostly the 55+ ones from my experiences) being asses to people who dont use "traditional sporting firearms" are hurting them. I dont care if someone's been a member there for 30yrs, if they are being a detriment to the club they need to be told to STFU by the other club members. Have a couple guys at work who just got tired of the attitudes at Beloit to just let their membership expire. Hell I had some clown there yell at me for walking with the muzzle down from the truck to the building. Pretty fucking funny since we were always taught to keep the muzzle aimed down when walking. Better to have a bullet go into the ground right there than to go off in the air and land who knows where. Also had it out there with some old fudd there years ago who was going off on some poor kid with a sportsterized SKS.

Yeah I haven't really done much range-type shooting, but I don't really want to. If I want to work on my stance or learn new things, Jerry Miculek is on YouTube and instructional DVDs. I don't want to hear advice from some asshat who makes up "tips" for new shooters to sound more experienced.

I'm not a new shooter by any means, but I am not a frequent shooter. These club types draw people away.

Frankly I don't care what anyone thinks of my firearms. I just really prefer shooting out in the woods by myself or witha few friends. My family used to have a cabin on Castle Rock lake and we did lots of shooting up there. Once the FIBs move in and built million dollar+ summer homes on the lake, it drove up the property values and ruined the area for everyone who actually likes the outdoors.

Since then I have been shooting very few times. Part of the reason I bought an AR-15 (other than the fact that i've always wanted one) is because I wanted some intrinsic motivation to find somewhere new to shoot.

And I heard the same story about the rock quarry. My friends dad took us to that quarry 10+ years ago and it was great. Nice and quiet most weekdays. We brought old water bottles and paper targets and had a great time. Really bummed that place is gone. I contacted the DNR and they said there used to be some places in the woods near milton that were open to the public, but people trashed them and they cut off shooting on public land. Yet another blow to the shooting sport.

Maybe some nice local AR-15 member has a ton of farmland we can shoot on :)

A guy can hope, can't he? Oh, well. Looks like McMiller is the closest membership-free place to go. Its a nice place, at least

Delavan has the Delavan Sportsman's club, but it's only open two days a week(Sunday and Tuesday). Daily "membership" is $5, and I don't think they have a problem with the Ole Black rifles(I used to see people using them there back in the day). I haven't been there in about 6 years(moved out of the area for a while), but it's worth a look/call.

I'd steer clear of Madistan. Lived here all my life, you're not missing anything.

Look up yellowstone range. It's a drive but worth it if you can go during the weekdays. Look me up if you want to get together. I have some silverbear I need to test out.

ETA: I have also spent a bunch of time near Castle Rock lake. My inlaws have land off of 82 coming out of Mauston.

Unfortunately my career path is going to be best suited in metropolitan areas. I'm an IT Infrastructure graduate from UW-Whitewater and I can't really afford to select cities based on their politics right now. I get what you're saying, but I kind of have to focus on my first post-grad job before I get selective on locations. I appreciate the input, though.

I took a look at yellowstone and it looks amazing. Exactly what i'm looking for. Wish it was closer, but 1.5hrs from Janesville is doable if I make a whole day out of it. I will need to stock up some serious ammo to make a trip like that count.

Thanks a lot for the help and thanks to the other member who suggested Delavan as well.

Aaron

Rifle ranges in the area include but not limited to:

Deerfield Rod and Gun ( $45 dollars year fee). Rifle/Pistol/Trap/Archery––all out doors. Rifle range is usually empty unless it's getting close to deer season.

Deerfield Indoor Pistol Range (fee's unknown). Last time I shot there it was no fmj, no rifles unless 22lr or fires handgun ammo less than 44 mag. Handguns 44mag and below welcome. It's a busy place to shoot but decent. Run by a former Marine and Cop. Has it's own gun shop.

Stoughton Gun Club - mentioned already. Their rifle / pistol ranges are the covered bunker types. The shotgun ranges are pretty nice.

One of the best ranges in the Madison area has got to be Winnequah Gun Club. 100-1200yard rifle, metallic Silhouette Range, bulls-eye pistol, all purpose practice range, bench rest sight in range, and then it even has it's own indoor pistol range. It's pricey though.

check out wheretoshoot.org For a listing of other clubs in the area.

Thanks for the additions to the list. If I end up in Madison I may have to look into the Winnequah Gun Club.

The problem with Winnequah is open shooting times. I went there to tour the place and was told the weekends usually don't have any ranges open because most of the range is rented out to various groups. It is also a lot of money to be a mameber there. I do agree, it is a NICE place.

I went two years ago to tour, I don't know if availability has changed much.

Thanks for the heads up. I just wish there was good public land to shoot on.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to pony up sooner or later. Still interested in Yellowstone.

July 6th at Yellowstone? I'm going to take that day off as well so I'd be interested in going to Yellowstone. Live in Madistan area.

Thanks for the offer, but I will be on vacation the first week of July. I need to place an order for some ammo before I go anyhow. I just can't force myself to pay Gander Mountain ammo prices. I only have 80 rounds on hand ATM. Plenty of pistol and .22 ammo though. Where do you guys buy your .223/5.56? I placed a few orders from Bulkammo.com and even after the expensive fedex delivery the WPA steel ammo is still $2 cheaper per box than the WPA at GM. Plus they have better brass ammo at more reasonable prices as well.

I looked in the EE for ammo, but I really can't drop much cash on a large ammo can until I get a new job. My current paid internship is barely paying the bills as is.

Thanks,

Aaron

I just ordered 1,000 round of This. I am interested to see if my rifles like it. I think it's $0.27 per round after shipping if you get two boxes(1,000 rounds).

Wow, that's a good price for 500. I think i'll give some of that stuff a try. I have been buying a few boxes of different stuff here and there cause I want to see if my AR will cycle the cheapest stuff I can find and the difference between the cheap/expensive stuff. I've got some Wolf steel, Federal Brass, and just got some Fiocchi that looks pretty nice.

I'm going to order a few 500 round boxes of that and then I will be ready for a day trip to Yellowstone.

The zinc coating seems like a welcome addition. The cheap steel mags that came with my DPMS A3 Lite 16 don't seem to like the rough steel cased Wolf stuff. It causes problems with the follower (no anti-tilt followers in those 2 mags), but it works fine in my Pmags. I'm sure the zinc would help smooth out the stripping of rounds from the mag.

Thanks for the link. I will stock up on that stuff.

Where is this? What's it like?

I live in Janesville and have been going to a friends farm out in Argyle to shoot. Don't go much though because of the distance. Would love to find a decent non-member place to shoot near by.

I hear ya there! My car got to the point where the cost to fix it was more than it was worth, and was a good down payment for a used car. So I decided I would only do minor repairs while I drive the wheels off it. The car doesn't leave town, so it's lasted about 2 years that way.
