Happen to catch the episode of Top Shot last night?

One of the challenges was shooting a mounted machine gun from a half-track.

A very good friends father (now deceased) used to buy half tracks, fix them up and sell them. This has been about 30 years ago. It was awesome taking them out in the woods and running stuff over. Imagine two high school boys with access to these, and no one around. Yeah, we had a lot of fun back in the day.

I can't wait to see what yours looks like when done,.

Wasn't there a big stink several years ago where the WI DOT refused to register & license privately owned military vehicles because of some bullshit about them not meeting federal motor vehicle standards? As I recall, this also applied to just about all wheeled vehicles too such as M151's and Deuce's also? What ever happened with that? Did they back down? Or did they end up screwing all military vehicle owners?

Yup, AB-592 supposedly fixed that. It wasn't a perfect fix, but it's a fix.

Official details: http://www.dot.state.wi.us/drivers/vehicles/personal/special/histmilitary.htm

Blog with some things in plain english: http://wihmvbill.blogspot.com/

Official application form: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/forms/mv2592.pdf

The two biggest things I see are that the vehicles must be historically accurate including paint schemes, no commercial use is allowed, and that there is really no allowance for recreational use. The problem with the first requirement is twofold- a "barn fresh" vehicle isn't historically accurate at that point. Technically, it can't be licensed. Next, it technically precludes a club from buying a vehicle and putting their club info/logo on the vehicle. The commercial ban is annoying because businesses could make use of surplus military vehicles to save money. I've seen military surplus trucks haul logs, do landscaping work, etc., in other states. That's not legal here. (Thankfully there is an exemption for municipal use- surplus military fire trucks are used in some rural areas.) Finally, I think it's sort of crappy that military vehicle owners can't use their vehicle recreationally. Who cares if their covered deuce and a half occasionally doubles as a camper? I recognize that a lot of owners get around this by calling their camping trip a "meet or show" with fellow owners, but still... Don't we have better things to worry over?

Anyhow, it's a partial-to-mostly fix.

a couple weeks ago the GOV. signed into law. and that law takes place some time in July this year... Now any PRE 1970 vehicle of military origan can be tagged as you want.. ( farm or regular or Collector/hobbiest.. or even as an Historic Military Vehicle.. the latter being $5 for life and it needs to be historicly correct.. for the most part..
the wisconsin DOT has finaly reconised the need to rewright the trans act .. as they are aware now, as wrighten,, its not enforceable with other elements of the laws..
there is some more work to be done for the People..
this has been a 5 year battle with WI. DOT.

Why does the DOT have such a hard-on against military vehicles & their owners? Who or what is driving their agenda? Or are they bored enough to think that they are actually creating a solution to a non-existent problem?
