I recently moved to C Springs where my dad had pointed me to a number of ranges; all of which seem to have been shut down since we moved from the area when I was a wee lad. Any free areas that give you 100+ yards?

Cheyenne mountain shooting complex is pretty cheap and can do up to 300 yds

Not really, gotta go about 7 mikes up rampart range road now to get past the "no shooting" signs and to the ones that say it's Ok.  Please don't shoot signs or leave trash!  People continue to do that up there and the USFS will keep moving the signs further in every year.  Welcome!

I really meant anywhere. If there are rules in the national forest, I don't know what they are. In the 20+ years I lived there I went shooting anywhere there was a suitable backstop, and at whatever distance that pleased me. This would be in the Park County part of Pike National Forest.

There are now over 20 exclusion zones in Pike National forest. And the places that ARE legal are almost a bit scary. Which sucks. Too many people and too few shooting spots.

Does the Forest Service provide a map of those exclusion zones?

Pikes Peak Ranger District Recreational Shooting Areas

Recreatioinal Shooting Brochure (PDF)

Local shooters are not helping the cause--they trash out shooting areas, destroy trees, etc.  A camper was killed by a stray bullet a year or two ago while sitting at the campfire; the culprit was never found, that I know of.  I would rather shoot at an established range (Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex, Dragon Man's, etc.) than go shoot in the forest.  There are too many people recreating in the forests nowadays, it's too risky IMO.

Thank you for this list! I also recommend www.FRIDPA.com (not a range, but fun shooting drills).

Local media are reporting that the fire near Rampart Reservoir, close to Woodland Park, was caused by shooting.  Expect the Forest Service to crack down even more now.  Way to go, whoever it was.

Is it true?  I don't know.  Would I be surprised? No.
